I want to replace my R171 SLK with a R172 model.

In the ads I sometimes see models with ambient lighting around the center console and in the doors. Does anyone know if this is an option? and if so, what is it called?

Hi,

As stated above it is an option, comes in 3 colours, default being red, (very warm tone), blue (ice blue tone and actually preferred) and white; white with a slight warmth to it.....(boring). All 3 are unadulteredly bling...(takes the lead in the Scabble longest word in a sentence SLKworld weekly competition with 13 letters ...."unadulteredly".

If you are buying second hand as an aprroved used car, then apart making sure the car is sound, I would suggest that you find a model with as many features as you can. The dealerships (in the main) won't charge you for the extras as they need to turn their approved used cars around quickly. Here in the UK, it has been noted that the dealerships are off-loading the 'returned' approved used SLKs to the independants.

Worth noting that only the SLCs have 3 color ambient light. SLK has just the red.

Recently had the local dealership A35 as a loaner for a couple of days while mine was in for MoT and exhaust flap. You can have any colour you want, literally, from a palette that covers the whole spectrum!
Clever little thing......

Haha so it is actually called ambient lighting :D and it is available in models from 2012 and up.

I am indeed looking for a car with as much options as possible. It will take me a bit longer to find the one I want but I don't mind. My R171 still drives like a champ. I recently bought AMG styling rims and new tires for it so i'm not making haste. It is just nice to be able to narrow my search.

Thanks!!

My 2011 Edition 1 also has the ambient light.

As a tip, you could look for Edition 1 vehicles. Even though they are a bit older model years (only 2011), they come packed with all sorts of options (due to being a special edition model), such as Designo interior, AMG exterior body, Sport suspensions, designo exterior paint (such as diamond white, or matte grey (the latter being a 3k option!!!)), etc...

Awhile ago, I saw a vehicle with almost full (if not, actually full) Edition 1, R172 350, on mobile.de, you could look for it, unsure if it's still available.

Also, in NL, I saw a full options R172 AMG 55 from 2012 (Roland's vehicle), which was sold for only 33k by the dealership, about 2 weeks ago.

Oh I would love to drive an AMG 55 for sure. With a bit more saving I can probably afford it too. But with gas prizes around 7 / 8 dollars a gallon and me driving it everyday for work it would just cost to much. Next to that, our government thinks that with the 17 million people in the netherlands we sure can make a difference in CO2 emmisions so there is an extra tax for high powered gasoline vehicles. So the wise option for me to choose is the SLK250. Has a bit more power then my 200 now and it is the best choice to make.

I should move to the states :)

Thanks for the tip on the 2011 models as well. For anyone interested Ambient Lighting is called 'Ambient Beleugting' in German. I thought it had to do with the ventilation unit :)

Hence the reason for Roland to switch to a Tesla Model 3 performance :)

I do agree, and I love NL for it, that emissions should drop, and it's a big thumbs up from me, that the govmt is doing so much, to lower the emissions; if only other countries would follow.
It's also the reason for me, to pick the 250, over the AMG. Besides, where would I use all that power?
But considering how much I have already spent on mine, to get so many options, I might as well have went for Roland's car.

I have high hopes, although challenging, that one day, I will be converting my 250, into an EV.
