OK, it's been nearly 3 weeks, but here's an update.

It turns out that one of the guys at work has a secondary business doing vehicle diagnostics, and he has all the original MB kit complete with subscriptions to online programming etc.
We've just spent an hour on the car, and verified that it is definitely the DAS/RF module, so I've now pulled it and am trying to source a replacement.

Would I be right in assuming it's a dealer part only ? or does anyone know of an independent stockist that I can contact ?
Unfortunately, all the MB dealers seem to be shut down with this virus thing !

Dealer Only, and they will need your attendance plus paperwork like V5 and Photo Driving Licence to supply, then they will want to code it onto the Car, so will need Transporting to them.

If you want it running now buy a used Theft relevant set from another Identical Car, the parts must have all come from the same good running Car.
You will use just the DAS / RF Module, Engine ECU and the Fob part of the Key, all plug and play, just press out the little pin to swap your own Key Blade into the "new" Fob .......................

Upsides .............. Cheaper, quicker and easier, may well last for years ......................

Downside ............ Could in theory go wrong next day, will report the Donor Cars VIN on diagnostic machines, (no biggie in UK)

Search EBay for SLK 200 xxxx(year) ECU / Lock Set ;) Basically either Pre Faclift or Post Facelift, depending which one your Car is ;)

:D I hate to say it and I am only joshin' ? but some couple of geezers told ya it was DAS RF Module in posts # 12, # 17 and # 18 ?

Believe it or not that's not a bad price, the DAS / RF job at Main Stealers will likely cost 10 x that ;)

And he'll likely have that little lot by the w/e .................

And I don't know this for sure, cos I've never tried it, but he may be able to get one of his Keys to synch with the DAS / RF using his mates SDS, (not the RF that's easy peasy, but the actual Drive Auth Chip) ;)

If not it is very likely that an MB Specialist Locksmith will do a spare Key for it

I have just ordered the item M4rCu5, (would that be Marcus ?) linked to.

As for keys, my man here has the hardware, software, and computer to do that as well, so I should hopefully have no problem with that.

I hate to say it, but your Guy cannot create Keys (unless he is a specialist MB Locksmith) .................

Even the Main Dealers cannot do that, every Country, (territory) has what is called a PDC, (parts distribution centre), our UK one is Milton Keynes;)

Every Key's programming is stored on the MB FDOK Database in Germany, and only the PDC can access that, so the procedure is Order from Dealer with your paperwork, Dealer orders Key from PDC, Dealer receives Key and must then program it to the Car.

What I was saying is, and it is only a theory, (as I said I've never tried it) is this .........................

If you have more than 1 Key he may just may be able to Program one of your old ones to work on the "New" DAS System, but that's a big maybe and only because R170 uses the old technology Keys but with later technology ECU's ..................

R170 Immo and Starting Circuit is definitely unique, (don't ask me how I know that), but my knowledge of it now says that it just might be possible .......................

It certainly isn't possible on other MB Vehicles, (even those like old W163 ML's etc which use the same Blade Fob Keys) because they all use a CAN Bus signal to Crank and Start ;)

The guy has equipment that programs key fobs, he has a whole box full of replacement new fobs, he showed me them. He just places the fob on a blue coloured box with lots of connector ports that he plugs into Xentry through some sort of interface, reads the required coding from the car, the software then goes online, gets more information, and uploads it all to the fob.
He can do it with all the latest keys as well as the older ones.He read and checked both my key fob's codes using this box, and compared them to the cars system, just to make sure they matched properly...... they did (y)

That said, I remember a while back one of my keys stopped working, so I looked it up on YooToob, there's a guy on there has a couple of minutes video where he shows you how to code the fob using the remote buttons and the ignition switch, that worked perfectly for me.

What you are describing is not Xentry, it may be on the same Laptop, IDK, but it will be a specialised Key Programmer like ZED Full or similar, perhaps even some of the bang up to date tech IDK ;)

It's a specialised process like EEPROMMING, totally separate from anything MB, and definitely not a process MB would be allowed to use or endorse ;)

The Ignition / button press you did only synchs the RF (Central Locking Buttons radio frequency) ...................

Like I said earlier, it does not teach in the DAS, that is a totally separate process ;)

I have 2002 SLK32 AMG and having same start error issue. Was looking on Ebay to buy the full set from a used car R170 (ECU DAS, Ignition & key, etc...) But they are not SLK32 AMG. Is that ok?

No, definitely not !!

The Kompressor ECU's are different both in terms of Hardware and Software, here is your cheapest option unless you can find a set from a 32 Kompressor ;) .....................

Buy a set from a V6 SLK320.

Get an independent Locksmith / Eeprommer guy to virgin your SLK 32 ECU, then you would install your original ECU plus use the "new" Key Fob with your Key Blade, and the "new" DAS /RF Module, and you have to do an extra step with SDS which is to do an "Initial Start Up" on your Virginised ECU to marry the Drive Auth's together, because a Virginised ECU is actually like a Brand new one, it is unlocked and will lock again after circa 40 Engine Starts ................

A little more complicated, and a little more expensive, so I suggest you get a price from MB to replace DAS /RF Module first, but I'd guess the Virginise Method will be cheaper ;)

There will be plenty Indie Vehicle Locksmiths in USA that can do MB's :)

If you were nearer me I could do the whole job for you ;)

Oh final step ? ...............

Post both the redundant 320 V6 ECU and your old 32K one to me, as no doubt I will need them soon to do another V8 R170 Conversion, and then fit a V8 Kompressor Motor in my Car ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Please let me know if / when / how you manage to get that original Key to start the Car, would be good to file that procedure so it can benefit Future Posters with the same problem ;)

Like exactly what equipment is used etc etc
