I know the roof mechanism in my 2001 SLK230 uses a hydraulic system to do the "heavy lifting. Is the R171 roof primarily a hydraulic system, or does it use electric motors?

The reason I'm curious is that I just read that the new Lexus IS convertible's roof uses like 37 electric motors to operate the roof. I'm just wondering if there was a reason Lexus chose this path over the current designs of MB & BMW?
