Hi guys, I have a 2000 SLK320 and have recently replaced the seal in the roof actuator and all was well. Now however the roof wont release from the windscreen despite the hydraulics working fine and the latches releasing properly as far as I can tell. I have adjusted the cables but still nothing and I cant even release it manually. Help, it's spring now and my wife wants to go topless. Cheers, SLK9

Welcome from Madrid ...

It would be best to open your roof problem thread seperately as more people are likely to see it and not mix up answers with introductions for future references !
In the new thread , can you describe in order everything that happens when you pull the button back to open the roof - windows down , trunk raises , flashing button light etc etc ?

Did you open the emergency relief when trying to open it manually?

Does the boot lid open?

Hi and welcome from the UK Midlands! :)

I hope the links that Jeff provided are helpful... it must be very frustrating to have something get in the way of your wife going topless! :D

By emergency relief I assume you mean undo the hydraulic release valve and yes I did. The boot opens no problem, everything happens as usual but the roof won't release from the windscreen mechanically or manually. Got me stumped

Welcome from the Sacramento Valley SLK Enthusiasts!

I don't have the answer, but if you can't get it fixed don't let the wife drive topless!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Had another go today and it seems the thread on the cables near the roof actuator are not 100% and may be slipping. Are there any threads on replacing the cables? If you can guide me to fixing it I'll post a picture of us driving it topless......just focus on the passengers side! I'll be driving.

You know how pocket knifes have a safety mechanism in the hinge to keep the knife rigid? Well, the two hinges between your roof and your rear window (above your shoulder) each have a similar safety. During normal "roof closed" driving these hinges must remain rigid (in case of a rollover accident).

The safeties are operated by the two cables -- when the rotary latches turn to release the roof from the windshield, they must also pull the cables to release the safeties. If they don't, the roof remains rigid and will only move back a centimeter or two from the windshield.

It sounds like perhaps you turned the rotary latches far enough to release the roof from the windshield, but not far enough to release the safeties. Try giving it a little extra torque, watch for movement in the safeties, and then see if you can push the roof back.
