Hi Everyone, A couple of days ago during the night, someone came and cut out a whiole section of my exhaust including the catalytic convertor from my R170.
Any ideas where I should go for a new one, (not Mercedes) where I won't get ripped off. I'm located in London NW4.
called kwik fit but thet weren't very helpful. Appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Try finding a local firm that custom builds stainless steel exhausts.
Mark
Thanks Mark, But its probably going to be quite expensive, although I've no idea how much a stainless one costs. Any idea for a R170 ?

I’m not sure about recent prices, but when I was looking for my old r170 back in 2013 I was quoted £249 for a cat back system and another £149 for a catalyst (all plus VAT). This was Tony banks in Leeds so a bit too far for you.
Thinking back I posted wanted ads on various MB forums and was offered one - may be worth a try.
hope you get sorted.
Mark

Thanks. The problem is also that I'm not sure what parts I need. They used a grinder to cut out a whole section underneath. The back box is still there. Also driving it like it is makes a hell of a noise.

+1 for custom.
It will be built to last and fit properly unlike the cheap pattern parts the the likes of eurocarparts sell.
I had one of the pattern ones on a z3 that I used to own and it failed the next mot so got it replaced FOC only for the replacement to fail a year later. I think I paid about £150 for it.
I had a custom one made and fitted at a local custom exhaust fabricators and it didn’t fail an mot for cat failure for the test of the time I owned it. I think I paid about £275 but well worth it.
Or
Just look for a second exhaust system from a breaker.

As f/u to my (insurance) inquiry, yes theft of that part is covered under my Comp(rehensive) coverage (sometimes commonly called "Fire and Theft". FYI.

Have you made a claim?
Insurance company 'might' assist you.

Price MB, but I'd probably go custom for the same reasons others have made.

Hi all, Sorry I couldn't get back to you all sooner.
Yes. I'll go with what Mark says. I'll have to find an exhaust place not to far to make and fit it for me.
I don't want to claim on my insurance because I've got other cars and it may affect my premium on them if I make a claim.

You could try a scrap yard, those exhausts must be plentiful if you want a cheap fix.

my mate had 17 VW van exhausts cut out in one night. And their secure yard is surrounded by houses. How on earth does no-one hear the angle grinder in the middle of the night?

Ps I had a custom exhaust built by Hayward and Scott in Basildon, Essex some years ago. They specialise in Subaru and the like, mine was for a Honda NSX and they have Mandrel benders to ensure smooth air flow etc.

cost me about £600 at the time, but it was a custom build. They may have the patterns on the shelf for an SLK

I just got quoted on Wednesday £900 fo a new stainless exhaust.
I'm thinking of buying a scrap or cheap SLK and taking a few parts for spares.

Why are they being stolen? Seems like a lot of effort and noisy?
Sold to scrap metal dealers, not just for the can but also contains valuable metals like rhodium, platinum, and palladium which are getting in short supply and therefore $$$

I don't think they're that valuable but they're very expensive from merc and not easy to get hold of elsewhere. They didn't just cut the cat from mine, but tok the whole exhaust, which makes me think its someone who wanted it for another SLK. Bearing in mind this is a 1999 year, they may as well buy a scrap car and take it form there and any other parts which I think I may do.

They have Been steeling Cats for years now as its easy money to be made and sold off as more and more here about it .
More people are doing it .
They remove cat off what is simlpest to do and quickest and less noise .

Normally they target Toyota Auris Hybrids etc or The ones with the most Expensive value on the open market .

But odd targeting an older SLK but a cat is still worth X amount regardless .
some can be removed off in minutes by the way .
Even if parked up your drive way cameras dont deter them .

If they want it they will have it !
