First, sorry for my english.

This is about R170 / 1997.

I just want to share with you. Throughout the summer, I had problems with the roof. It was impossible to open! ABS lamp lit all the time. The diagnosis proved wrong on ABS sensor front left.

We changed the sensor to new one but it did nothing!
And the diagnostics showed the same error!

I bought a new sensor, and changed again! Now it works the roof!
It turned out that new sensors can be broken and fault! And that if the ABS light is on, the opening of the roof is impossible.

Hi Nicolais, Glad to see the welcoming committee has welcomed you!

The ABS error disables the roof for safety! With dysfunctional ABS a car is more prone to rollover in extreme conditions. Roof being up provides more protection during a rollover event; hence, roof is locked closed to ensure best safety until the ABS is fixed.

A likely reason is that the speed sensing portion of the ABS is telling the roof not to do anything because the computer can't tell how fast the car is going. Mine shuts down the roof operation even if it is partially open when the car reaches 10 mph which is when the doors lock.
