The google link comes up with a load of different photos , but I know what you're refering too , having worked on both types , there's no difference , although the box changes the ECU connector is the same !!

@JaysonM I read those instructions too. But that engine's electronic box is still a little different than mine.

@curro101, Ok thanks. I trust you.

Btw, I'm going to make a video of it.

In the instructions (which i didn't recieve yet):

if you look at step 10, you see the electronics box next to the battery:
http://www.mods4cars.com/sms/db/smarttop/ext/support/manuals/mercedes/STLFMZ1/install/en.php

this is the same electronics box that i have in my car (got the picture from google):
http://gtcarlot.com/data/Mercedes-Benz/SLK/1999/603501/Engine-61834281.html

Is this an issue? I think the pictures in the instructions are post facelift.
I don't see a difference between the box in the instructions and the pic you posted.

In the instructions, the box is next to the battery, just like in your photo and all R170's facelift or not.

The photo in the instructions has the cover of the box off, is that what threw you off?

@DaytonaJae, what i was worried about was the shape of the box. The shapes are clearly different which i wanted to make sure it was the same thing, just the box had a different shape.

Pre-facelift has the 38-pin connector making a bulge on the in-board side of the box.
The post facelift has no such bulge, since it has OBD2 near the bonnet release under the steering wheel.

No other differences in the electronics box, AFAIK.

Well I have all the instructions and pictures all I need is my smart top. Looking at Fed-X it is in Florida now I hope it does not take as long to get here to Ormond Beach, FL as it did to go to three different place in CA and then 5 day to get to Florida. Hoping to have it tomorrow. Have to play golf in the morning and then work Friday though Monday big weekend at Lowes Labor Day. So looks like Tuesday will be the big day for the install. I am sure it will be here by then. :sBannana2 :sBannana2
Can't start on it and not finish in the same day, might forget what I was doing. I have CRS.

Ah now I see what you are referring to! I did not know there was a difference pre and post facelift R170, you learn something new from this forum each day!

If the wiring is different I am sure mod4cars would have notated that in their install instructions.
