Well, I didn't want to spend a ton of bucks on shocks so I thought I'd try out the KYB shocks. I even work for ITT who owns Koni shocks and get 1/2 off of 1 set per year. lol. Anyway, the KYB shocks were pretty inexpensive.. $225 for all four (ebay, new). Ok, so "how do they work"... ABUTTLOAD better than stock! Yes, way better. I took the car for an illegal rip up Tapo Cyn, which is tight twisties with quick elevation changes. It was beautiful. No swaying around like with the original shocks. Without a doubt, a HUGE improvement. I can't compare them to a good Bilestein or Koni (which are probably loads better) I can only compare to the stock shocks.. that SUCK!. I took it for a little rip on the freeway and all I really noticed is that they prevent the car from "jolting" over the bumps/dips. I'll take it to work on Monday (70 mi r/t) and see how it does over some seriously crappy freeways. I'll also get to try out my two favorite long turns... first being the 118 to 405 onramp which is usually good for a 60 mph tire squealer and the 126 to 5 south onramp which is good for 80+ on the SLK. (almost 90 on my G35, and well over 100 on the Z.. :-D )

Specs:
car: stock SLK230 Manual tranny
tires: General Exclaim UHP (love these tires) stock sizes for stock 17" wheels
wheels: 17"x8" amg knock-offs.
total time of replacement: 1.5 hrs. "pull in - to - test drive"

recommendation: Great choice for an "all around" shock. I'm sure the others mentioned above would be better for the track or more "spirited" driving.

Thanks Eddy. I know this isn't the kind of thread to stir emotions however I figured someday, someone like me is going to search for any feedback on these. I didn't find a whole lot of info anywhere, on any site. I'm the guinea pig.

Speaking of feedback... a little update: I drove the car into work today. It does seem to ride a little firmer on the freeway however it doesn't jolt you over bumps like the original (ie worn out originals) did. With 92k miles on the car, they were probably the original originals. lol.

I put KYB gas shocks on my customized PT Cruiser, and yup, a world of difference. I also installed the spring set with them and run 225 wide tires. No squeal, no roll, it's like driving a whole different car, and a PT Cruiser is pretty heavy for it's class. Now, it's fun to drive.

When the time comes, I'll most certainly be putting them on my Kompressor.

How are they holding up? Am thinking time for an upgrade as I find the steering is pretty unimpressive (67K miles on mine)

I drive the car quite a bit and, up til a couple weeks ago, took it on several "spirited" canyon runs. I'm happy with the handling however I do have four cinder blocks in the trunk which help make it a smooth ride on the fwy. We took the car to Vegas for the Retreat and Ken took my car on the track. (I couldn't let him drive his rental VW girly bug around Spring Mtn Raceway). The pictures of Ken in the turns are about the same lean angles as the rest of the R170s. (cinder blocks removed for luggage space)
I still think they're a pretty good "all around" shock.

I know this is an old thread, but thought I would offer a differing perspective should anyone being, again searching the forums on this topic looking for advice before a purchase.

I bought an 02 SLK320 which had recently been fitted with KYB Gas-ajust shocks prior to my buying it with 82k miles. The car came with the sport package originally and from day one I noticed a slight hoping or up and down motion over bumps that didn't seem characteristic to a sporty car like the SLK.

In speaking to my mechanic who has worked on a number of SLK's he described mine as the worst riding SLK he has ever seen, including newer AMG cars. It is not what could be called harsh as I have had sports cars with sport suspension before. From what I understand, the SLK SP1 package (AMG Appearence) is just that and doesn't change the shocks from the regular SLK, which I had the change to ride in a fellow SLK owners car with new OE shocks and the ride was night and day.

I am now faced with an unexpeted expense of wanting to buy new shocks...

Take my input with a grain of salt, but consider both sides before going the KYB route, or any aftermarket before buying.

everyone has a opinion on the differences in ride quality.
generally eibach/h&r springs should match up well with kyb.


for myself, whats stiff to some people is decent to me depending on what you are trying to achieve in terms of "sportiness"

i'm probrably going to order kyb agx's as well.

too bad tokico doesnt make adjustable shocks for the slk =(

if the KYB's are the adjustable type - - - I think it would be important to know what settings they were on. If "gas adjust" is simply a model name - and they are in fact "self adjusting".. then that is another story?

So guys - which is it?

I put KYB's on my 2000 and while the ride was improved from my totally shot Le
It does suck on the highway. Living in Minnesota we have a fair amount of frost heave and expansion joints and on many stretches I often bounce down the highway.. Very uncomfortable. I haven't tried putting finder blocks in the trunk but maybe I'll try it.
