Hi everyone - I'm considering purchasing a 1998 SLK 230 with 20,035 miles on it! The asking price is $9981 from a Mercedes dealership. This is a one owner vehicle. Just looking for impressions from members of this forum. Is this a reasonable price for this car? Everything that I've seen on Blue Book tops out at around $7400 for a SLK230 of this vintage. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us! :)

Sounds a little on the high side, but then the mileage is VERY low... I guess it's worth as much as you're willing to pay for it. :D

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
  • Post your VIN (or VIN of a car you're looking at) in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a free datacard (options on the car).
FREE!! How to get a free data card!
  • If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
  • If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.
  • Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If iPhone/iPad pics, you can only attach 1 pic per post this way as iOS names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
  • Want to 'like' or 'thank' someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any individual’s post that you like. This saves you having to comment.
  • New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link in the info bar towards the top of the screen is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.

Welcome from Wirral, England.

In the UK a one owner low mileage car of any kind commands a high premium.

Especially if standard trim with only OEM extras from point of first sale and no crash or theft history.
So long as it has MB or MB specialist servicing.

It's very hard to price as they are as rare as hens teeth.

You'd need to speak to an expert.

The cheats way is to ring other dealers and say your thinking of selling a car of similar description, different colour.
You don't want to reveal your license plate/VIN for personal reasons (if they do a check they'll figure what your up to).
Remember that the price offered for you selling to a dealer will be lower that if you were to buy that same car from a dealer.

Good luck.

Relatively speaking, no matter how low the mileage, you can't add but 30%. That is from a buyer's retail perspective. The dealer, naturally wants as much as he can get. IMHO it is too high. Mileage is certainly important, but remember that all the parts, rubber, are still aged. Some might say an I driven car can sometimes present unusual problems.

A great find though. Good luck!

Welcome from a very warm Berkshire in the south east of England. Whereabouts in DE are you? I visited Laurel every summer from 1999 until 2014. Visited family but sadly she has now passed away.

Apparently the dealer knows its value. As stated, if everything checks out you'd be crazy not to buy it. However, as also stated, the rubbers, seals, etc. would all be just as old-unless records demonstrate otherwise. It's never good to let a car sit without driving it. onviously that one got very little use. What of the oil changes? If you look at the thread "Oil Change Intervals" you might wonder if the short trips which likely occurred actually did the car any favors.

Personally I'd probably jump on it. But it may serve you to remind the dealer that this is not the type of car an 'average' person would buy. The demographic of potential buyers for a car like that is limited by the very nature of the car itself.
