I am considering buying a 2002-04 SLK AMG and was wondering what I should be looking for as far as common problems or issues. If I find the right one, I might take it to the dealer to be checked out if they don't charge an arm and a leg.
Thanks in advance!

I found an Independent Mechanic that worked on Mercedes and had STAR Diagnostic. I took my used R171 to him and he did a pretty complete pre-purchase inspection for $250 or so. Read up as much as you can on the R170's here and you will come across all of the known issues. Then do your due diligence accordingly.

In the end you'll be smiling. These cars are an absolute joy to drive !

Though I'm relatively new to the forum and to ownership of the SLK32 AMG, here's what I discovered from lurking, searching and researching:

K40 Relay - problem with cold solder joints. Can cause multiple problems.
S/C Inter-cooler pump - insufficient volume and/or breaks.
Hard top hydraulics - can sometimes leak, causing roof to not operate.
BAS/ESP failures - K40? relay, inertia sensors (lateral and yaw)
Rear tire wear - caused by excess of use of the long skinny pedal in the driver's floor well.

I'm sure some of the old heads will have more. Not to mention corrections and admonishments for my ignorance!

Thanks for the information. I know little to nothing about MB vehicles, but have worked on my Mustangs for years, and my current car (Honda S2000) for the last 3 years. I've been looking at several vehicles (ACURA NSX, BMW M Roadster, M3) and just happend to come across a 2004 SLK AMG. I did a little research and didn't realize the power they had which sold me. I was glad I found this site and will probably spend countless hours here.
Thanks again!

Sounds like me.

I had two criteria when looking for this car: Convertible and fast. I looked at the ones you did and also at Boxsters. The power of the AMGs is AWESOME. My little six will smoke every other six and most 8's!! Plus the all-season aspect of having a hard top was the real clincher.

I just got back from a couple of WOT runs. It still makes my "naughty parts tingle!" Awesome car with great handling, a superior ride to other roadsters (though still not a sedan) and MB reliability.

Take the plunge, you won't regret it. And if, after buying it, you have second thoughts...just get behind the wheel and drop the hammer.

Isn't this interesting - I too have an S2000 ('08 model) and have an interest in the SLK AMG. In fact, I'm so interested that a couple of weeks ago I went to my local dealer and put in an order for a 2013 model. All he could tell me was that they would start production around July and I should hope to receive it around a late Aug or early Sept timeframe. He couldn't even give me a price yet - hopefully they won't go up too much. The S2K is a hoot to drive and I was thinking of adding an S/C, but that just seems a bit much for that 'austere' car.

I thoroughly enjoy my S2000 and think it's still one of the best looking cars on the road today. Its quick and handles great, but I would like more "seat of the pants" feel. It's not known for it's torque numbers and I don't feel like messing with the reliability by adding a supercharger.

The S2000 will be gone Saturday so I started my journey to buying a SLK32 AMG. I looked at two tonight and what a disappointment. I didn't drive either one because I couldn't get past the fact that both had electrical issues. They were both at used car dealers so it looks like I will be buying from a private party. Neither sales person could really tell me anything about the car, and didn't know how everything worked. They both seemed to be not taken care of which I was surprised being a Mercedes. I found two more prospective cars, but unfortunately both are about 4 1/2 hours away in different directions. If you know anyone selling one within a 6 hour drive of Virginia Beach, please let me know.

I knew nothing about this car when I bought mine. I purchased from Carmax in Irvine, CA. I'm glad I did, because they have really done me right.

Shortly after purchasing, and within the 30 day warranty period, the trunk started hanging up on the rear bumper, forcing me to get out and pull the whole thing back to "unhitch" it over the bumper.

Then get back in the car and push the switch again, so the top would fold into the trunk the rest of the way.

Carmax has been working on the car for two days. They have a Mercedes mechanic there, who knows these cars. They're going to replace whatever needs replacing, with new parts, once they've determined the cause.

They say they're not satisfied with just "adjusting" the top... they want to get to the bottom of the issue. I find this refreshing for a change.

The car itself runs great. With 75,000 miles, it feels powerful, solid, handles dreamily, and is just FUN to drive. I can only imagine what a newer version would feel like.

I would take the plunge all over again, but not with something that has obvious electrical issues. So far, there are none. But I purchased additional warranty coverage just to be safe, so, in case the supercharger blows, I can replace it for a small deductible.

Not that it will blow. But it's worth the peace of mind to have "insurance."

I have no quibbles with anything on the car. There is nothing that I wish was different. I love the interior dash layout, the Mercedes look and feel are unlike any other car. Just good, solid, working parts that are a joy to look at, touch, and admire. It's a great car.

If you get one, you'll understand why people who own them love them so. I miss mine. I hope it's done soon, so I can back to drifting around corners again... rear wheel drive is AWESOME!

If you are buying a 2004 SLK32 AMG, have you even considered its V8 cousin? the SLK55... These start from the 2005MY and can be had for as low as $20K depending on mileage and other stuff.... An SLK55, pardon my bias, is a great car and that V8 sound is worth the extra $$ over the 32. A 360hp V8 has lots of power on tap and its just smiles all the way driving one of these monsters... PLUS, it looks awesome...

Just put a deposit on a 2012 SLK 55 AMG

I am new to this forum. I find it interesting that many of you own S2000's. I have been driving MBs for many years. The only AMG I had was C43. I wasn't too happy with it's performance. I own a S2000 MY2000 myself. I am in the process of selling this car. It has ample modifications, Ultimate Racing ball-bearing turbo charger, HMS ecu, Defi guages, Tien suspension, Volk Racing rims. If I were younger, I would keep it; but finally I decided I am really over the hill. I need something more comfortable but still has performance, but not a track car. I have been looking at the SLK ever since it's inception, but due to one reason or other, I have never seriously looked into getting one until the 2012 model appeared. I went and test drove the AMG version and was quite impressed with the combination of performance and technology(economy too). In Canada, the options are usually bundled up in packages, and we cannot order them separately. The one that I ordered was Obsidian Black with Bengal Red leather interior, including both Premium and AMG Performance Packages. I believe with these two packages, the only options not included are the magic sky control and the tele-aid. I hope that I can sell the S2000 fast, so that I do not have to look after so many cars.

I am new to SLK, therefore I have a couple of questions to ask.

1. Is the "blind spot assist" option available in the US for 2012 SLK? We do not have this option for 2012 SLK in Canada.
2. Is the "blind spot assist" available as an aftermarket installation?
3. What other options are available outside MB for SLK?

I found a 2002 with below average miles for a fair price and am picking it up on Friday. I ran a carfax and it shows that it has had regular maintenance with a couple of parts being replaced. I'm looking forward to the 5 hour trip back home, hopefully in good weather.

I'm picking up my SLK32 today and was wondering if anyone has their MB OEM front license plate holder sitting somewhere collecting dust. I priced one at the dealer, and if I had a non AMG, it would be $42, but of course mine is $148.00. I found the same part online for $93.60, but would like to pick one up from someone not using theirs. Thanks!
