We were invited out for a day's sailing with friends from Picton.

Cast-off was scheduled for 10AM so we (our 350 and buddy/wife in their Cayman) set sail from Ottawa and sadly had to take the 416/401 (freeway) most of the way. Still it is pretty green along the way, and the leaves were starting to get a touch of colour. We exited at hwy 49 and headed south onto the penninsula.

Picton is a pretty little town, daing back to the late 1700s/early 1800's and the United Empire Loyalists (those that migrated north when y'all left the family in 1776). Lots of old stone and brick homes in the area - great architecture.

The days sailing was great! This fellow (a long time "Mountie") built this 44' trimaran over 20yrs - well it and the barn to build it in! Lovely couple, weather was super with temp 22C or so, and light winds.

We didn't get back until about 7pm. We walked up into the village from the marina and had dinner at Currah's on the main street. Good food and local wines. Service was ... relaxed, but they did seem busy at the time.

We traversed the county in the dark to Sand Banks and stayed over night at a B&B (Van-Cottage - nice couple). We arrived after 10pm and were greated with drinks on the bluff overlooking the sand dunes and beach. Very nice place, great breakfast in the morning.

Part 2 to follow.

Day 2 was more car oriented to be sure. Probably the best stop was Sandbanks winery. Fotos below. Well hosted and great wine. We visited 5 wineries in convoy (along with another couple in an SUV....) but Sandbanks was by far the most fun. We must have been amongst the first in. On leaving there was a four ship of Mustangs, including one Saleen (all from PQ).
Stopped on the outskirts of Picton for a late lunch at The Waring House Inn. Very nice, and we understand the lodgings there are also nice.
We found our way home via the Lake on the Mountain (very scenic) and the Glenora Ferry. We continued along Hwy 2 through Kingston and Gananoque and on to the 1000 Islands Parkway - very scenic. Unfortunately, not terribly twisty and far too many other sight seers to really step it up.
A great weekend out. I strongly encourage members from eastern Ontario, GTA and northern NY to come on over and give this area a look.

It is indeed a beautiful area! We spend about 10 days there each summer... with the kids though its the beach and sand dunes that are the main attraction!!

Did you check out the County Cider Company Estate Winery in Waupoos? Fun place, their cider is fantastic, and they have a great view onto lake Ontario!

Cheers;
Eric

We were there when the kids were little. We need to go more often! The whole area is great...it would be nice to rent a place for a week.

What's new along the border there Eric?!
