Power Seat Problem: Not Relay related

Had an issue today with my drivers side seat being inoperable. Unfortunately it happened when I was cleaning and the seat died all the way forward and tilted as far as it would go so I could vacuum behind the seat. Now the car is undrivable for anyone other than, well no one I know..

After three hours of trouble shooting I have determined it is not the relay (passenger seat works fine), it is not the fuse but the problem is at the harness.

It seems that the positive lead in the power seat harness has broken. As you can see in the picture there is a break in the little barrel-end of the connector and it is not making contact to the seat motor. The brown wire is the ground and the red is the positive, you can see by how the ground looks in the picture what they both should look like. The positive is missing about a 1/4 inch of the connector.

I unfortunately will have to carpool tomorrow with my wife and try and track something down to repair on my lunch break. Then try and get home before dark and try and fix it before Wednesday.

Does anyone know, or think the dealer might have in stock these little solder pin/connectors. Or can you think of a store that might have an alternative (Granger?)...

I tried a bullet connector but it was too big, and the fact that there is less than 2 inches of clearance under the seat, plus it being all the way forward makes it nearly impossible to get to the plug.

The seat is at its maximum forward position and the wire is so tight, I can't even get it plugged it (there is no slack). I'd love to find an extension for the harness, but realize that is probably not something that anyone would have in stock, if they even exist.

Any suggestions?

After another two hours I was finally able to get up under the seat enough to run a jumper and power the seat back to a position that I could get to the bolts and remove it. Seat is out of the car, where it will stay until I can get the part installed that I had to order from the 'stealership.

Armed with only a photo and generally idea of what to call the part in 'german car speak' I ordered what the parts counter guy thinks is what I need, and at only $6.13 ea. they must be solid unobtainium.

Anyway, I finally was able to get down low enough to see what I was doing and connect a jumper to the circuit, after removing the lower half of my dash so I could get my head and both arms down to see under the seat. Talk about a stretch of the body...

anyway, not sure if this is a one-off occurrence or if these contacts get fragile with age, but irregardless I will post pictures of part, along with part numbers when I get them in case some other unfortunate soul has this same problem.

I hate to say it, but despite being around cars for more than 30 years (in them, around them and under them), this was the most frustrating thing I have ever dealt with. The harness is about 1 inch to far under the seat and just out of the reach of my hands, with the structure of the seat hanging down. Getting tools in there was nearly impossible. Thank goodness for multimeter probes and alligator clips

I thought I would update you all on the current status of this issue. First off, it really helps for the parts department to see the car. Despite mine not being drivable, it would have helped to prevent them from ordering the wrong part. Even with a picture of the round barrel connector (first picture below), they some how got in square connectors. I think the miscommunication was that the problem was in the harness coming from the floor to the seat, not the connector that goes from the seat to the actual motor. They sent the terminals for the actual seat motor, which were wrong.

Hopefully we resolved the issue and will get the right part by my providing a harness number. For those like me who had never noticed, MB puts numbers on each harness which helps them identify where it is. Based on another picture (second picture below) I had in my phone I was able to get what I think was the correct number for that harness (#129545027).

That all being said, by shear accident I have found a temporary solution in a box of old computer parts. It seems that your hard drive in your computer connects to the mother board via a 4-pin Molex plug. These plugs use a male pin, into a female barrel connector nearly the same size as the power seat harness of the Benz.

I actually have made my own computer cables (last picture) and had an unused barrel connector that I was able to slide over the male terminal on the seat. My plan is to make an extension cable this afternoon (with the seat out of the car), so I can at least get back on the road until they get me the part to fix the right way. For anyone else who might not be as interested in keeping your car original, or doesn't mind 'Gerry-rigged' wiring in their SLK. You could easily fix this issue and move on and save $6 on the unobtainium connectors.
