Potential 2016 Private Track Day - UK Midlands - Curborough

EDIT: Due to lack of response from Curborough, this track day is no longer being considered as a possibility

I just want to sound out who might be interested in an idea I’ve had about possibly running our own private track day…

The track is only a very short sprint track in the UK Midlands (near Lichfield, Staffs), here: http://curborough.com/
and here’s a little more info about the track layout: http://user28967.vs.easily.co.uk/curborough-course-layout/
I’ve driven this track in both a Golf R32 and my Westfield, but not in an SLK. It was fun in both, even though it’s only a short track.

If we do this, it would need to be on a weekday. Apparently, the track is already booked out for most Fridays this year, so I’d probably try to find a Monday sometime (but couldn’t guarantee that yet).

Some other key points, if we do run our own track day here:
  • There is no insurance for you or your car - it is entirely at your own risk, and there would be a waiver to sign on the day.
  • Everyone needs to have a crash helmet ( drivers and passengers ).
  • Only allowed one car on the circuit at a time and not allowed to time your runs. Given that it’s only a short track, I’ve seen this work well (each person drives 3 laps and then comes in, allowing the next person straight out for their 3 laps, etc.) - also reduces the risk of someone else driving into you!
  • Cars are only allowed on the track from 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:00, although you can open up the track and be ready to start on the strike of 10:00.
  • Max limit to attend is 15 people/cars.
  • The cost would depend on the number attending, but would likely be somewhere in the range of £55 to £100 per person.

If it does go ahead, I would be making no profit out of this day. Final payments would be calculated to cover costs only.

So, after all that, who would be interested in doing this?

Potentially interested:

2. DPA (Dave A)
3. Col
4. seanhump

Potentially interested, depending on date. Opposite corner of the Midlands from me, but if a Monday I'd combine it with a Sunday cycling round the Peak district or Shropshire hills.

Thanks Andy, my first choice would be a Monday, if there are any still available once we get enough names... we still need quite a few more responses before I can say it's likely to go ahead though.

If anyone else is interested, please respond here... :)

I'd like to see at least 10 people interested before I start the planning to make it happen... I realise it will depend on the date, but I don't want to plan and book a date before I know we have enough interest, as that could put me hundreds of pounds out of pocket, and I don't want that to happen (you can't imagine the trouble that would get me into at home!). ;)

Dave, if you thought it appropriate I could ask a few select friends who may be interested. All are responsible 40+ car and bike enthusiasts (we used to race bikes together back in the day), their cars being a 911, Griffith, Vantage, Elise and possibly one or two others. One has organised a sprint day at Curborough in the past.

Ah, there are 2 other pals with SLKs I could ask; there's an outside chance one or both may be interested

Andy, more than happy for you to extend invites to friends too. :)

I would be interested too! Have been there before with an MX5 and loved the fact that it is only one car on the track at any time.

Any thoughts on potential dates yet, bearing in mind you haven't got your ten yet......
How about early May? Or were you thinking earlier than that?

No dates in mind yet, I was waiting to get enough people interested before planning the date with the track owners. The fewer people that can make it, the higher the cost per person works out to be.

I'm out of the country at the moment, but I'll try to figure out some potential dates once I'm back next week.

I'd say that it would be good to wait until at least May anyway, so that we increase the chance of better weather. I'll update here once I've got a better idea on likely dates.

My 911 and Elise pals have expressed an interest, and both have some track experience, but not sure yet whether they'd be able to commit to a weekday.

Weekend days aren't available, as the track's already booked for other events then. I'll make some further enquiries and see whether I can get a Monday sometime, as it might be easier for people to take a 'long' weekend rather than taking a separate day elsewhere in the week (and I know it's already quite busy on Fridays too).

I'll update here once I have more to share...
Week days work better for me. My weekends are pretty much booked solid through to November.

I am new to the forum as this trackday came up in a discussion at work with a guy who is a member of this forum. I have registered so I can contact directly.

There is a guy I work with plus myself interested in this event bringing a car each, assuming you are ok with non SLK owners turning up!

Any news on this day yet Dave?
TonyS
No news yet Tony, other than to say I'm playing telephone tag with the person I need to speak to at Curborough to arrange this... I'll post more news here as soon as there's more to tell...

Btw, I hope you enjoy Gurston Down Speed Hillclimb tomorrow! :tu:
OK Dave, noted.
Thanks for the good luck wish, I'm really looking forward to it and praying that I don't bend the 350!
Weather looking so-so to OK......
Report and pics when I get back.
Best
TonyS
