I have to laugh at the term "poser" being thrown around out here so much that there is a section dedicated to it. The term poser is a term designed to insult. Someone calls me a poser to my face and he might not be walking away. "Dems fightin' woids." lol Just saying... There are a lot of guys that think "cloning" a nicer model is cool and it's their thing that they like doing. It's their car and their money so it isn't anyone else's business IMO unless they are trying to defraud someone when they sell it. Some believe that there is nothing wrong with calling a car what the manufacturer has begun referring to it as also... The situation might also be that they have no idea that someone else has a problem with it. Can it be annoying? Maybe. Is it annoying enough that you don't mind a hospital stay? That's up to you. Maybe the juice is worth the squeeze for you. Good luck if it is...

My only true concern is, as you say, it being used to defraud.

Selling an AMG which is not is very bad.
Selling it as with some AMG extras and a list is fine by me.

Sadly, we have seen new members join, having paid an AMG premium, only to have their dreams shattered.

I honestly don't like that poser thread. I find it unnecessary.

I hope you're not for real about physically hurting someone if you were called a poser. Masculinity is such a fragile thing
Society could use a little extra "masculinity" these days... People might be a little nicer to one another if they knew there were repercussions. That's not what my post was about though, so let's not derail.

Avel Du,
I agree. That's why I mentioned it, however; "caveat ēmptor". If you're spending the money, get edjumacated first so you don't get taken advantage of. You will never get rid of con artists. They aren't "posers." Once again, JMO.

I have been in the car scene for a very long time. The posers know that they are posers. Someone that takes a SLK350, puts the 55 bumpers and exhaust tips on then rebadges as a 55 is a poser. Or just taking a lower model and putting the higher model badges on, such as throwing an AMG badge on a non-AMG car. The first example looks like a 55, but it isn't. Now if they take a car and put ALL of the bits for the upgrade they are claiming (like is someone spent all the $$ to upgrade a 55 to a black series) then by all means go for it as you literally turned it in to that model.

If it didn't leave the factory as an SLK55, it will never be an SLK55 IMO. I have a 69 Camaro SS396 X66 with original drive train. It is one of the most cloned cars out there. When I say cloned, I mean down to paint marks on the calipers. The ones that are clones will never be anything more than what they left the factory as. Are they nice? In a lot of cases they sure are, but it doesn't change what they actually were.

I respectfully disagree about your derivation of poser as an insult. I personally am ignorant of many things. If somebody calls me ignorant, that in and of itself is not an insult. It is the intent behind the utilization of the word that ultimately define whether something is an insult or not. I am a poser in life, I pretend have taste and culture because I drive an SLK. In reality I am a boor. Calling me a poser is an accurate description. Calling me a poser because you want to put me down is an insult. I proudly declare my ignorance, calling me ignorant is a truthful statement. Calling me ignorant because you wish to elevate your status above me, is insulting. I believe this is the message that @Melania was trying to convey. @HawkX66, I am not trying to offend you, merely expressing my view respectfully, I’m apologizing in advance if it comes across that way. By the way, I am not implying that you are calling me ignorant.

Right, and I said that example. If it was a 350, there is no way you are turning it in to a 55. I agree with collector cars, they are a bit different as they are historical and serial numbers matter.

Very nice way of looking at things. I'm happy to admit that I am also ignorant of many things, but don't call me ignorant. You are correct about the usage of and intent of the word. I will end my comments with the fact that I believe most people that use the word "poser" mean it in a derogatory way whether they will step up and admit it or not.

I'm going for the AMG badge on mine... But think about it. besides for the things that are labelled "AMG", Mine will have all the AMG stuff. (engine, trans, brakes, ECU etc.)

Plus it has the "AMG" sport package and the wheels already say it. I think of it as a promotion of what's under the hood, like someone putting a Kleeman sticker on the back.

We are all "Posers", if we were not we would choose our cars based on economy and practicality. What we drive is is an expression of our identity. Now that does not mean I don't smile when I see something that I would not been seen dead in - that no doubt is the owners pride and joy and for which he has spent a good deal of time, money and effort, to get it how he wants it. We could all be generic citizens driving the same thing but its the characters that keeps it interesting. They are making a statement - whether its read they they want it to be, is another thing.

On the subject of posing, on a visit to Italy I have seen guys dressed with such attention to detail that there shoe leather matches there belts exactly. Or girls embroidering a flash across there jeans pocket that exactly matches there shirt. I've seen two girls walking along together in Italy that must have rang each other that day because their cloths so complimented each other. Now me I throw on what I think best in the morning.

In America I have seen police cars with enough aerials to imitate a hedgehog and enough emblem's logo's and braid to rival a tinpot dictator - if that's not posing I don't know what is.

Me, well I wouldn't be seen driving a three wheeler, anything French (Renault, Peugeot, Citron) - The French don't give a hoot about cars. As for badging the car with AMG logos, I'm more than content with the 350. Its a big engine compared to most things on the road and people will know that its capable of moving along if I want it to. Imitation is is the sincerest form of compliment and that's why I think people might label there vehicle as something perhaps they cant afford in reality - but aspire too. Nothing wrong in that.

Any way interesting theme and one that generates an opinion in most people - now then, maybe a monster truck SLK085 with AMG logos all over it :)

Nope I find 3 kinds the ones who do the legwork find the right colour, the ones no time not really that interested just want a car of a make a model and my hate to say it girl mates who for whatever reason will not test drive and just like the look and colour and believe the bull out of the sales persons mouth.
Im nominated test driver for lots of my girl mates as if I don’t they end up making poor buying decisions I make them do the leg work but until it is explained they don’t understand it and don’t want to.
A lot of it has to do with this want it now throw away society.

I get the poser label but I’m happy driving my purple Slk, didn’t do it for anyone but me so they can take a hike and talk to the hand.
I’m the type that would debadge a 55 as for me it’s about the car being what I want and need not what people think.
I get so many positive comments about Stirling Surtees that out weigh the odd plank, but if they what to get into it I’m quite happy to let them know they are wrong helps having a mouth the size of the Mersey tunnel.
Stirling is an everyday car that I drive in all weather, lives on the road outside our house,i do a full food shop in and use as a car not some museum car that comes out on high days and holidays.
The car makes me happy it does make me laugh by what people think poser is.Some it’s just because they see a car that’s different from the norm my mates in there 4 door box call me a poser not in a derogatory way it’s just to them it’s a flash car.
Now if you're trying to make the world think you have a 55amg when in reality it’s a 250cdi then you need to have a word with yourself as more than anyone your deluding yourself.

I had a guy giving me [email protected] when I stopped at traffic lights in Oz. He was telling me that I was a poser. I mentioned to him that his shade of green did not suit him - the woman in the car with him burst out laughing and he immediately made a left turn. He thought I was a poser.

Posers take many forms....and IMO dressing a car up to look like something that it is not (i.e. a better / more expensive model) is posing.

When I talk about my car, I say car and don't mention what is is - however I have a friend that will bring the make, model and year into any conversation...he is a poser..."I drove to the coast in my new Volvo XC90" - I'd say "we took a drive to the coast........"

Potentially anyone that does not drive a convertible probably looks on all of us as posers - all in the eye of the beholder.

You can blame Lego for that as when i built my cars from that i always added more Bricks to make the spoiler look bigger - faster .
I think adding is a built in DNA thing from child birth we always want to add or improve a look or make it go faster .

Its been happening for hundreds of years .
