Got a chance to drive a G6 hard top convertible over the weekend as my rental - have to say I was surprised by how quiet the cabin was compared to the SLK, both top-up and top-down. The interior material and the trunk were terrible - the trunk, in particular, almost has zero space if you were to let the top down. Worse yet - there was no "floor" in the trunk; there's a big spare tire in the middle, and your belongings just sit unbalanced on it. But.. the car is extremely quiet. Passengers who wheren't car-savvy had no idea it was a convertible. I also drove it on the freeway with top-down -- much quieter/significantly less turbuent than the SLK. The body also feels less prone to flex than the SLK - no creaky noise over bumps, etc. (This car also has 12k miles on it already, and doesn't appear to be well-maintained by the rental agency.) What a surprise.. Pontiac designers must have done something right with noise insulation/aerodynamics.

Actually, that's the vinyl trunk divider needed for the top to operate (a la R170) extended. Beneath it, there's the big well with a spare in it.

p.s. Just got back from my trip and got in the SLK. It really is much louder. But I think I might have been wrong with the assumption that it has to do with the top/aerodynamics; I think the noise it coming from the tires/bottom of the SLK.

:tu:I really like the looks of the Pontiac G6. Not enough to buy one. Can't dispute your claim, you've driven both. Always good to hear a positive report on any thing. I drive my SLK almost exclusively with the top down. I'm always surprised at the quiet atmosphere with the top up.

Hey Clu - who's renting the hard tops? I just spent a week in a Hertz G6 Sedan, and I didn't think it was anything remarkable, but man, the interior is *really* plastic.

They gave me a Sebring for the next leg of the trip and it was actually a comfortable car (and at least has Sirrius!). I think Hertz has really started downgrading the fleet spec cars they are getting - neither had power seats, and both had about the cheapest interiors I've ever experienced...

Got it through HotWire for $20/day at Burbank airport through National. I was supposed to get a regular G6, but was given a G6 hardtop (there was an entire fleet of them in the parking lot) after I walked up to my slot and noticed my original had the hood propped up. Couldn't complain about it. :) And no, the interior was not attractive like you said.

I believe that any noise in the SLK cabin is primarily tire noise, with a little bit of intentional exhaust noise thrown in. The SLK has stiffer performance tires compared to the touring tires on the G6. The SLK has a stiffer suspension too. The SLK exhaust is tuned to give a bit of a "growl", even in the V6 models. So, for these reasons, our C 320 sedan is quieter than our SLK 280. We have had our SLK for about a year and it has yet to develop any hint of body flex. Indeed, it feels stiffer than our Honda S 2000, which is famous for its rock-solid body. Of course, it must be brought out that our SLK 280 has 16" wheels and tires are only "V" speed rated. So a smoother ride and less apparent body flex is to be expected, compared with other SLK models with larger wheels, shorter tire side walls, and higher speed rated tires.

So basically, there's a trade-off in play here. The more sporty handling, the more noise. The quieter the car, the less sporty the handling will be.

It is good to hear that the G6 is a decent touring hard top convertible, in spite of a deficient trunk. If you want a good laugh, look at the trunk (if that is what it is) on the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky.

I'm surprised so many people here are saying good things about the G6. My friend rented one. It was complete rubbish in all aspects in my opinion. I would think that after the driving around with the refinement of a Mercedes the stark difference of a G6 would be more striking but I guess not.

I'm with kungfudevil on this one, Pontiacs (as well as 99.9999% of all American cars) are complete garbage, from the cheap plastic interiors to the poorly-engineered drivetrains to the ugliest designs in the entire automotive world. I kept expecting someone to say the thread was a joke.

I don't know what you guys are talking about when it comes to road noise. I've got the plexiglass rear screen, so maybe that's why I don't have any noise, but I'll tell you - my car is very quiet (almost silent) at freeway speed. So quiet that my girlfriend and I can carry on a complete conversation at normal volume. I also do not get any wind turbulence in the cabin to speak of, unless I have the windows down.

If anybody would like, I have a professional field recorder (my girlfriend sings opera) with a very nice unidirectional shure mic, and can drive around with the top down and record how loud it is, and post the MP3 here. If your car is louder than mine, you might want to look into the plexiglass screen, or maybe have your local MB dealer check it out.

Also, I don't have body flex issues. I've driven my SLK-350 at about 135-140mph across a mountain pass, with the top down, and it felt completely solid. At one point, I was taking 30-40 deg turns at well over 90mph with no probs at all, and I really don't get any creaks/squeaks from the body when hitting bumps, etc.

I think if you're hearing a ton of noise, it might be time to check into a new set of tires. If you're hearing a lot of body noise when cornering or hitting bumps, you might want to have your springs and shocks checked and perhaps replace them. You shouldn't be hearing that stuff. My SLK is a 2005 model with about 28k miles, and I have none of the symptoms described here.

I previously owned a Lexus LS430, and the SLK is just as quiet with the top up. With the top down, it only really gets loud when I'm hammering on it, and that kinda noise is pure bliss to my ears.

yeah, i can't decide which 'vert looks worse, the solara or the G6. Both lack any sort design...they are essentially blobs surrounding a grille, headlights, wheels and a roof.

My SLK is also very noisy compared to my CLK. tried both with the same set of wheels and tires. SLK is DEFINITELY louder, but not enough to really bother me. What hear is road whine.

The problem with the G6, Solara, and all the convertibles that are based on a sedan platform or a universal platform is that designers are given the limit ability to modify it for convertible use. So we get models with unusable trunks, like the G6, Solstice, and Sky. And, in some cases, the styling just can't be made to work (Solara, which has been discontinued for '09). And in some, but not all cases, the designers can't get the platform stiff enough without adding performance-killing weight.

It is usually the case that, to get it right, a convertible or roadster must be designed from the ground up AS SUCH. Our SLK's were, and so were the SLs, S 2000s, Miatas and a host of others.

Haha that's what I was thinking too. I was like "Wait.......are they really talking about a G6 here?"

Solstice, and Sky
The scary thing is that the Solstice / Sky, Opel GT, and Daewoo G2X, were designed as roadsters from the start. GM even created a whole new platform called Kappa to make the cars possible.

Unfortunately / fortunately GM is killing them off as there will be no Kappa II platform due to cost. I read somewhere that GM loses around $10k on each Sky/Solstice sold due to the high cost of the platform. Kappa sounds actually pretty neat, they use hydroformed aluminum, similar to the Corvette platform. GM shot themselves in the foot again by designing the platform for only one engine and only left hand drive.
