We live in the U.S. Pacific Northwest on a rural island with considerable rain, frost and ice on the road in winter. A few years ago, my wife totaled a nice Porche on a very tricky, frosty corner. Now she has an 2008 SLK 280 which she loves. At present, we have an all-wheel drive Honda Ridgeline, which I drive when the roads are bad. However, I don't expect to make it through this winter and my wife will get rid of the all-wheel drive truck both for ecomic reasons and because she hates driving the truck.
I'm thinking perhaps of looking for some used wheels and a set of M&S tires to be installed each winter. Is this a good way to go? Does she have to have Mercedes wheels? If this is a good way to go, any recommendation on the best tire? She will be driving very little and very cautiously.. Probably one 50 mile round trip a week to town for supplies.
