I am being told about the Peregrine Refinements power enhancing module for the SLK. The claim is that this plug-in module will seriously improve the power delivery.
Has anyone any experience of this module and perhaps provide credence to its use? Is it worth spending €600 for what I'm assured is a simple, easily regressable installation?

What is their claimed 'seriously improved power delivery'? How is it done? Have they published independently verified figures?

I ask because I have never heard of this [I presume] chip. Not that means very much as there are so many. There are cheaper chips from better known names such as Racechips, but honestly most of it is snake oil. All they do is remap a few things that Mercedes have held back for comfort.

But let's go back - what do you want from the 250? These aftermarket chips claim maybe up to a 20hp increase. In reality this might be 10hp. Are you sufficiently aware of what a 10hp increase would feel like? I along with most others would not recognise it on a 250 because the car it is pretty nippy already. (Unfortunately it is going to be short lived with the extra nippiness in the 2016 line-up!)

Choice is yours of course. You will certainly get a re-map, but you are not going to be magically elevated up to V8 performance, you might get a change in fuel consumption and maybe, possibly, a noticeable change for the worse at low revs. If you are going to go ahead, have the car dyno'd before and after and let us know the changes as it is very easy for us (there is loads on this subject in the archives) to cynically say snake oil without being fully conversant with what is going on.

If you are intent in squeezing a bit more out of the engine, try looking at Kleeman. They do one or two things for the 250 and have a proven record and reputation. Unfortunately more than €600..!

I found their website Arabella - clearly a lot has been spent on it. I was expecting something a lot less I have to admit. However no mention of any prices so I expect you have been in touch and had a quote.

Because of the quality of their corporate house front, I really would like to see some data though! They claim to get an ML63 bi-turbo from 550hp to 670 with various modules - I just cannot see how!

I definitely think you should buy a module and have the car dyno'd so we all can see..!

Thank you Hal for your very thorough response
It is my partner initiating this, personally I'm very happy with the stock SLK250
My interest was piqued because I'm always cynical of the "something for nothing" claim
How can such a relatively cheap and simple "upgrade" make such a marked difference?
What are the trade-offs?

Vaeth also claims they can get a lot out of the 5.5 twin turbo engine and that's a very reputable company. But not for 600 EUR obviously, more like 6000 or even worse. They would change the complete exhaust and install larger turbos, things like that. Just a tad more than changing a chip.

On the MB World and MB UK Owners forums there are a handful of SLK250 CGi tuning disaster threads. Maybe only 2 or 3 but it's 2 or 3 more than you'd like to see. GAD Tuning, who are one of the best known UK Mercedes tuners are effectively saying the SLK250 CGi is a "chocolate" engine ie. It melts easily.

Brabus, the tuning kits officially allowed to be fitted by Mercedes dealers, only get 25bhp extra from their stage 1 B25 kit. If you want 40bhp (B25S) extra they fit a bigger intercooler and waste-gate. They're not doing that for looks.

So I'm not convinced that tuning this engine is a great idea.

We're going to go ahead and order this Peregrine system. My partner has accepted responsibility for this "upgrade". He's going to get the car "dyno'd" before and then again afterwards. I'll report back the results and even a possible demise in the family :)

Great! I really look forward to seeing the results. As I said above, so many of us put these chips down often without knowing the facts. So the more documented results will either curb the arguments or allow people to make informed comments.

Piecha have been pushing me to take one of their chip boxes (I say 'their' in knowledge it is probably a badged buy-in). Maybe next time I want to trash some cash, I might buy one and compare the results with your Peregrine…

Keep us informed as it will be very useful.

If you want to throw some money my way, I can send you a magical incantation that will get you more horsepower! Actually it will get you even more horsepower than the mod chips.

A magnet taped to the fuel line ensured more power & extra mpg - in the 1940's !!

If you read deep into the various pages on their website (it's like at least 4 or 5 websites bodged together) they claim up to 7 inputs are measured on the petrol tuning box!

If that is the case then it's a very impressive system indeed. And it won't be a trivial installation unless it's a true CAN-bus interceptor ECU which would seem impossible for the money are asking (Brabus, MTM and Abt make true secondary ECU options for retrofit to various makes of Mercedes and VAG cars and they are all at least double what Peregrine Refinements are asking.

I genuinely can't wait to see what it looks like, what the install is like and what power it makes.

I know that Shark have had very good success tuning the VAG 2.0 petrol turbo engine with a three channel tuning box sourced from DTE/Diesel Tuning UK so who knows what the Peregrine box is actually capable of?

Please evidence these threads as I cannot find them.
