No, your datacard says:

772 AMG STYLING PACKAGE-FRONT SPOILER, SIDE SKIRT
796 AMG MULTI-SPOKE WHEELS 18" WITH MIXED TIRES

so you have the amg package. While not an amg engine, it is permissable for you to have the badge and probably came with the car

Yes thank you. I just read it again.
Before this car I had the opportunity to buy an Obsidian 07 SLK55 AMG that had been in an accident. The front passenger quarter panel and passenger door had damage. It had 23K miles and the body shop wanted $17,999. It was one of those, "If you want it you have to take it now" deals. I don't know enough about cars to tell if I was getting in over my head with possible damage I couldn't see. Every time I look at the brochure and read about the SLK55 I doubt my decision because that was one badass car!

(Edited because I put 09 by accident. It was an 07)

No, you did the right thing. When it comes to collision damage unless you're an expert better off to let it go by. Remember you usually get what you pay for with these cars.

OP, I have no agenda; the badges on your car don't sway me emotionally or psychologically one way or the other.

But can we please stop perpetuating this myth? Sport package or no, Mercedes does not put AMG badges on the trunk lid of non-AMGs. I've seen this a couple times on this board and it was occasionally floated when I had the SL55 and frequented R230 boards.

OP, that said, please keep your car AMG-badged and enjoy it over the years of happy SLK-motoring that I hope come your way.

I am uncertain either way about the dealerships doing the AMG badging but I have seen some sitting at the dealerships brand new and they were badged AMG because of the sports package that was placed on the car. There was no AMG engine and yet they were there badged so I would still say its safe to assume some dealers potentially add that to try and increase the sales potential and pass it off as a sports package badging.

The data card shows your car being optioned with the sports package so I would just leave it be. If your worried about it you can remove it or just add the other badges (SLK 350) back on to show your not posing. Then again I think the clean look is the way to go. I would like to remove mine but at the moment they are hiding a minor indention/ding that sits right under the K so until I get that taken care of my badges stay on for the moment as camouflage :)

Thank you for your opinion everyone. The most passioned replies come from AMG owners. Not trying to step on anyone's toes.

I don't put anything above any dealership. I know people who absolutely love their dealership and will fight you to the death if you say they fart wrong. Please don't say a dealership wouldn't do anything to get a better price for a car. It's their BUSINESS!

I'm a big NASCAR fan! I've been to Indianapolis before but just to the track so I'd love to actually not be drunk at the track the whole time :tu:

AMG badging is a subject that could join politics and religion on many MB forums' verboten list. Some AMG snobs get their shorts in a bunch over the thought of "lesser vehicles" ;) diminishing their precious status symbols. Badgers defend their right to do what they want. Some of the rhetoric gets outright nasty.

The only serious objection to the practice is its unscrupulous use to take advantage of the unknowing at sales time. Caveat emptor...and a quick way to identify the slimy or unknowledgeable out there, unfortunately, too often after the fact.

For the record, the MBUSA managers on the AMG PL site have said repeatedly that only the full bore AMGs have ever gotten the factory badge...but if it makes you happy...go for it.

My $0.02?

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Yes it's got AMG bits on it, no it's not a pure AMG.

But it's a badge, fill yer boots, there are far more important things in ones life to get ones underwear twisted about!

I don't hang about on the UK MBClub forums because they seem to have the attitude that unless one has a 2014 AMG with 63 in the name you are not worth the time of day.

:)

My daughter didn't know the difference between AMG 'sport package' and the real Mc Coy - otherwise she wouldn't have challenged me to a race.:)

I think MB can take a lot of the blame for the confusion and abuse. They should not market and brand their sports packages as "AMG". There should be a clear distinction. Wheels and body trim cosmetics do not an AMG make, but that's the message they sell.
