Major concern:
Ok, about a month ago I changed the oil in my 2000 slk 230. Made sure and replaced the o ring for the filter up top and I also replaced the crush ring but I don’t remember if it was an actual crush ring like the original one. For some reason now I have a serious oil leak! While I had the car up on the ramps I pressure washed the bottom of the entire engine and within minutes I was able to see oil trickling down again. It’s not coming from the crush ring, it’s not coming from up top as far as I can tell. I have no clue where it could be coming from. Are there any hoses that need replacing? My car currently have about 140 thousand miles on it, what have I missed? Oil pools in the plastic cover and I have oil splatter up top of which I suspect the lower pulley may sling some up there from time to time. Anyone had this problem and if so please give me some pointers! Otherwise my mechanic will charge me 105 just to look at it and try to determine where the oil is coming from. I don’t have a low oil light flashing as of yet because the oil level still looks good. Even though I added the correct amount could I have not drained it completely and overfilled it and this is causing my leak? I’m beating my head against the tailpipe trying to figure this out. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Did you replace the big O-ring at the top of the filter housing? Did you remove the old one first? Is the oil filter housing screwed on tightly? You've got to clean things up and then trace the source of the leak.

Check that the seal for the filter is seated correctly , not pinched in anyway .

A garage changed my oil once ( different car ) , nipping the seal on the filter and I lost all the oil !

Sorry so late posting my findings. I checked the filter rubber ring and no issues; everything seemed in good order underneath the car. I really couldn’t find any evidence of exactly where the oil CAME from! After a complete inspection yielding nothing I cleaned the engine riding it of all signs of oil leaked. Since then there has been on leaking, no drips formed in the bottom plastic cover and no spray on top of the engine. Seems the oil leak is no more. I don’t know what or how! The only conclusion I can arrive at is when I changed the oil for some reason I didn’t completely empty all the old oil. When I refilled it with the correct amount required I wound up in an overfilled situation. Even though the dipstick didn’t indicate such I can’t think of any other reason for this leak. My dipstick still reads full. My thought is the excess oil escaped from somewhere but where I have no idea. I do know that if this is or was the case then an oil leak should still be present but as of right now the entire engine top and bottom remains clean and free of leaks. Only time will reveal any problems to come if any! I drive the car roughly 2 hours roundtrip to work nearly every day and all systems are still go! If anyone can advise me further please do so and thanks again to all of you who chimed in to assist me.

I don't think a little bit of an overfill would have caused that. If the leak has truly stopped, I'd think that a more likely scenario is that you or someone may have spilled a little oil when changing the oil/filter or adding.

Yes, it could be very possible that I spilled some oil but I usually make certain I don't! I'm still monitoring the situation because in my opinion it was a pretty bad leak. I have noticed the continued smell of oil after a drive. It's more present as I stand near the front of the car, not so much in the cabin since the last oil change. I am some what mechanically inclined and I know if I have a leak they don't fix themselves; however for the moment it's all clean. If the leak return I'll take some pictures and post them for further suggestions. Also if it begin to leak again I'm taking it to my mechanic because I don't think I'll be able to make a positive diagnosis of where and why I have this leak. I'll surely share any new findings as they occur but but as I mentioned, I'm in a hurry up and wait here! Thanks again for all your support and input.

If you've got it all cleaned up well, I'd just check it daily for a month or so and see if it reappears. With things all cleaned up, you ought to be able to easily pinpoint where the leaks originates.

Ok, leak is still with me and not letting up. I did notice that nearly every time i open the hood the oil dipstick is not seated securely; it rids up nearly a full inch! I can't say that this is the culprit though! I'm now going to take in to my mechanic because I'm out of tricks! If anyone knows anything I've missed or not tried please chime in.

if the dipstick is coming out id say you have excessive crankcase pressure check all your engine breathers are clear.i had a mk4 escort xr3i that had the breathers so badly blocked that if you opend the bonnet and rev,ed the engine the filler cap would pop off
