My son recently had a problem with his car and we spent a couple of weeks trying to locate the fault, long story short, his mate turned up with a small OBD2 reader, plugged it in and problem solved in no time.
So, trying to 'be prepared' and just in case I hit a similar scenario with my 1999 SLK, thought I'd get one after checking my SLK was compatibile but, I'm getting some rather confusing answers from my research - some say it will some say it won't, connect to an OBD2 reader that is.
My SLK does not have an OBD2 socket in the cabin but I have found the circular 38 pin female socket in the engine bay.

So the obvious question is; will an OBD2 reader work in this socket if I obtain a suitable 38 pin adapter? or is it a stealership only facility.

I believe that the USA models had them in the cabin. The European models were still under the hood, and as interstate stated, should work with the adaptor.
