Hello my name is Dave. I have been a member of SLK World for a while but never introduced myself. I, like other members basically use the site for repair information. Today my top on my SLK32 AMG broke again and I found myself back here. After getting my password emailed to me for probably the third time in 5 years I received the "please introduce yourself" and an invite to come to Lakeland for the SLK event in October. At that moment i realized I am retiring and that might be fun. So hello everyone. I'm repairing my 2003 SLK32 AMG vario roof and restoring for the second time a 1966 230SL. My blog for the 230SL: https://dadsmercgarage.wordpress.com. Hope it's ok to post that. Also my last repair on the roof was front locking hydraulics and I found a cyclinder repair shop here on this site. Shop is in Bradenton. By the way thank you for this great site as I have used numerous times.

Welcome from Wirral, England.

Not only are you on the best forum for the SLK, you're in the right spot for the activities too.

The sooner they build the Atlantic bridge the better.
Has to be a bridge, what use is a tunnel to a cabriolet.

Well, for one thing, it doesn't rain in the tunnel, so you can keep your top down.

Welcome back Dave and AWESOME 230SL Blog

I'm repairing my 2003 SLK32 AMG vario roof and restoring for the second time a 1966 230SL. My blog for the 230SL:

Hello Dave and welcome back to SLK World. I am a fairly new member myself, joining I think about 1 month ago. My very first post, 5 minutes after joining, was a video series on how to replace the rear window regulators on a 2005 SLK 350. You mentioned your restoration on your 230 SL and I thought I would share a quick story. The reason I am new to to SLK World is because I am also new to Mercedes ownership, having acquired "Mickey" my 2005 SLK 350 only 2 months ago. But . . . why did I buy a Mercedes among all the other offerings out there? Well, about a year ago I was driving to work at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport when I spotted that unique Pagoda Style roof on a car in front of me. I knew immediately it was a Mercedes, but I had no idea what model it was. I sped up and took notice of the chrome letters 2 3 0 S L on the trunk lid. I actually wrote them down so I wouldn't forget! This started a feverish search on the Interweb for anything and everything SL 230 thru 280. I fell in love with the car and the idea of one day owning such a classic beauty . . .

Well, being that I am in no financial position to own such a car presently, I continued to just dream and educate myself on Mercedes and watched the "Happier" series that Kent Bergsma shared on youtube along with many other of his vids. Well, after 31 years of marriage and still only being on my second vehicle, a 1996 Toyota Tacoma with 335,000 miles, I felt it was time to keep my Toyota as an occasional driver and purchase something else to replace him. For the longest time I looked at other Toyota Trucks, nothing newer that 2004 since I didn't want a full size truck and I just love the body style of the 2000 thru 2004 but . . . the price you have to pay for one with 150,000 is not far from what they sold for new ! I then considered something radical, buying a Mini Cooper because a good friend of mine just had. I went to a very reputable Mom and Pop shop dealer and test drove a used one, but wasn't all that impressed, WHAT DID IMPRESS ME THOUGH . . . WERE THE TWO MERCEDES An C-Class and an E-Class which were on the lot !!! I was floored at the price of each car, they seemed astoundingly reasonable considering what they sold for new ! From that moment on, I started thinking Mercedes , especially when I ran a few VIN Numbers across my Insurance Agent and found that it was ACTUALLY CHEAPER TO INSURE AN 05 MERCEDES ROADSTER THAN MY WIFE'S 03 TOYOTA AVALON! Another pleasant shock indeed.

So . . . to make a very long-winded story perhaps a little shorter, I believe it was greatly due to that first sighting I had of that oh so Classic Pagoda roof atop that beautiful 67 230SL that set the Mercedes hook into my heart. If one day my financial fortune should improve, I too would hope to be the proud owner of one of these remarkeable and dare I say, quite elegant cars.

I will follow your blog on your beautiful car with avid interest and wish you the very best of luck with it,

Michael

What roof issue are you having? Where in Florida are your located? I'm in Lakeland and have rebuilt all 5 roof hydraulic cylinders and could give you a hand if your close by.
