Hi all,

I just happened across one of these cars a few days ago and now I'm interested. I'm currently a 300zx guy and was planning on getting another one but before I pulled the trigger I searched comparable prices and a few of the SLK32s came up. I took a look at one today and it was kind of beat up and had oil leaks so I came here to see what I should be looking out for. I noticed the ESP/BAS light was on also. The car seems to be a 6 on a scale of 1-10 and they want $8500 for it. I'm down to do the work if its worth it or do I wait for a cleaner one? How hard is it to work on this engine? The Z is a 10 on the hard to work on scale.
I did notice also that when in park I couldn't rev the car over 2k rpm. is that a safety feature? I wanted to check to see if I would hear the supercharger. Since then I read you can't really hear it like I would expect.

Anyways... I think I'm hooked.

Couldn't find an edit button. The car is a 2002 SLK32 kompressor.
You get the 'edit' button after 15 posts

Thanks. Yes I have been searching and searching also but welcome any input here too. I think this may be the car to get as much as I want that twin turbo swapped convertible 300zx. The car would be mostly for taking the wife for cruises up the shore but I do also like having something that is a head turner and can give the Stangs a run for the money when needed. Seems the SLK32 fills those gaps but I'm new to MB and have no idea if they are money pits. At least with the zx there are tons of documentation of how to fix every single part since it's been around for so long and it has a really big community. Getting parts is easy. How hard is it to get parts for a SLK32?

Hi there! So far I have learned a ton about these cars digging through the forums. I think I may wait and buy one from a private owner instead of that dealer. They got terrible reviews and people have gotten cars that died miles after leaving them so they must be bandaiding things to get them off the lot. I will still test drive the car but the one thing I can't seem to find here is that problem of not being able to rev the engine in park. Will go to 2k -ish rpms and then no response from the gas pedal all the way to the floor. Oh and it did idle rough for the first few minutes it was on then smoothed out.

Sounds like you have enough concerns to look for a better example elsewhere... being the pre-cursor to the SLK 55 AMG, the SLK32 is a great car!

I can't speak for the R170 SLK32, but I know that the R171 SLK 55 AMG also has its revs limited when sat there in neutral (or park). Not as low as 2K, but mine won't rev any higher than about 3-3.5K revs... I know because I tried it when I had my X-pipe fitted (check the link in my signature), and then others agreed their SLKs were the same too! :tu:

PS. I forgot to say... Welcome to the forum from the UK Midlands! :)

How many miles are on it? While the price is a good one you have to ask yourself why the dealer hasn't fixed the obvious problems.
Dealer also has a poor reputation? I think I would pass on this one.

The 32 is a great car  IMHO

MB can be expensive to fix, particularly if everything's has to be done at the dealership. But if you are a DIY person, I think you can almost fix anything with the help of this forum! Wrench monkeys abound:grin:

Sadly, just not me!:frown: Go find you a 32, they are sooooo much fun:wink:

Hi guys, nice meeting you. The mileage is 114,101. I can wrench most things but anything major I can't because I don't have a private garage. After reading up on here most of the things I saw that were bad on the car seem to be on par with the normal wear and tear. The only thing that scares me is the oil leaks on the front of the engine. The alternator has a sludge build up on it from the oil. I had to do the front and rear main seals on my zx which put me back 2k recently. I can't imagine what it would be on this car but I guess with a supercharged car its inevitable it will start to leak oil. The car has some small rust spots, the biggest near the antenna which is about the size of a quarter. Everything lines up body wise. The price is good though and I'm not expecting a perfect car. I'm getting it to restore so the decision is a little hard to not get that one. The roof works fine, the ac works, the power seats work, doesn't smell moldy, interior is beat up but I see that's normal, the doors close smoothly.
I'm glad your car has the rev limiter so I guess that's not an issue anymore. The more I read about this car the more excited I get. I still love the zx but can't wait to see what the differences are going to be. I don't like that the SLK32 is an automatic but... so far I haven't read any threads on tranny problems.
