My wife and I just came back from watching a show at Austin City Limits. So just before getting the SLK out of the parking garage we lowered the top. After having this beautiful car for just a week, the convertibles tops acrobatic display amazes me. I feel like I am in a Transformer as it changes forms.

As we came up to street level the sounds of Saturday night downtown Austin came into the car. I could hear people talking, laughing and the city moving with life. I think the movie "Crash" had it right. We really are insulated in our cars. The top down, all the lights from the skyline and the music from the clubs came into the car. It's like being a little extra alive. So vivid and visceral, is this how a motorcycle feels downtown?

It let the world in, without me loosing my sense of personal space in the car. As we moved out of downtown, and towards the lake, the lights of the city receded and the quiet of suburbia began to envelop us. The car was so quiet we just glided by houses. I could feel the neighborhood, settling in for the night.

As we got ready to get on the highway we pulled into a mall and closed the top. I immediately felt the intimacy of the cabin and the outside world kind of pulled away from me with the shutting of the windows. I never thought a convertible would find itself into my world but it's such a unique experience, that I hope to have the SLK for a very long time.

Mark good for you that you enjoyed a great night out in Austin a good show and a topless night in the Slk. I have to agree with you driving around inTin Cans. I had several drop tops like an old Mg Miata and Volkswagen. There is nothing better going down the road with the top down smell the road kill looking at the stars at night. I love driving with the top down in the winter heater on full blast windows up. Winter in Arizona LOL. But my fav is the monsoon season here in Arizona with the top down. You drive down the road completly dry and 10 miles later it rains like crazy and 10 miles later dry as a bone again. But the smell off rain is just priceless

:tu:Top up, top down, two different vehicles. After driving top down, I'm surprised how quiet the SLK is with the top up. Top down is a great experience in good weather.

Best of all is with the Smartop module. I don't have to pull over to raise or lower the roof. The wife likes the top up at highway speeds after she has done her hair when we are going out. The Smartop makes it easy to switch without worrying I have to stay parked while the roof does it's magic.

Mark...I enjoyed reading your vivid and very well written description. I too enjoy the extra sensations present when driving with the top down.

We recently rediscovered the beauty of older buildings in our community. While slowly cruising through the older part of town, I looked up to see some incredibly beautiful and ornate building parapets. Something that would have been missed with the top up!

I with you, Day or night as long as the top down I am happy! This is our first convertible and we are sold. We love the sounds and smells of driving with the top down. A sunroof seems so silly now.

Thanks for sharing with us Mark! I must agree that a top-down drive changes everything. For me it seems like it opens up the whole world and you can breathe easier and feel closer to the elements. It makes every drive an adventure! I bought a Fiat roadster 20 years ago and after that I swore I would always own a car with a convertible top! If it's above 45 degrees F. and not raining (well maybe a little bit!) then down it goes! I remember once I was driving in the winter with snow on the ground and freezing tempratures and decided to have the top down...heat on full blast! The police pulled me over as they said I looked suspicious! Once they realized I was not drunk or crazy they sent me on my way! :)

If I ever sell my wheels and tyres I might be able to afford a smart top. :)

Mark - you've summed up exactly the essence of open top driving!

I'm new to SLK ownership, and new to open top driving. Fortunately we've got some nice weather here in the UK at the moment, and I'm loving just driving round.

Night time is a different experience all together. The neighbours must think I'm mad going out & coming back in the small hours. I don't care! I'm just loving the experience!

Las Vegas by night, this were the top down most fun under the neon lights
That must be like fireworks or real fireworks depending on the night. I've only been to Vegas once, do people "cruise" the strip on a regular basis? Driving by the Bellagio at the right moment, might make you think your by an ocean wave crash, does the mist kind of fill the air around or in the SLK?

It's getting to be part of the night. There's a french commercial that I saw someone post online about the road calling to the driver of a SLK in the middle of the night. So at least some other's know that all to good feeling.

About 20 years ago I had a job that I didn't get to leave for home until about 11:00pm at night. On those Summer nights one of my favorite things to do was take a top down drive in my Fiat. It was a great way to relax and unwind before hitting the sack for the night! So glad to see everybody else enjoying the same experience!

Friday night always bumper to bumper of fun. All convertible cars you see on the strip have their top down.:rb

I too am glad I am not the only one with the feeling that top down is the only way to go. I just returned from a 2400 mile cruise with a bunch of fixed roof vehicles. They couldn't understand how I could go all day with the top open. There was a half a day with rain and had to close myself inside the SLK. Kind of claustrophobic and dark in there. As soon as the rain let up...down came the roof....Really the best part is connecting with the environment, feeling the wind and hearing the sweet sound of engines and exhaust notes from mine and the the other cars around me. I love my SLK

It is amazing the smells you get with the top down - unfortunately living in Australia, and it being the road kill capital of the world, the smell of a dead kangaroo can last a long time even at 120kph.
