Hi!!

I'm Dianne from B.C.

I (hopefully) have posted a couple of photos showing rodent damage to the insulation on my battery box. Removing the engine to fix the problem (as suggested by Mercedes dealer) isn't an option. Any ideas on how to repair so this looks decent? Does it have to have insulation around this small area where it chewed?

Thanking you in advance! :)

Hi, thanks for that reply. I'm not sure what sound proofing mat is...would that come from an auto parts store? That sounds like a good idea and I will check into it. Yes, that is the only area chewed. I'm still getting over the trauma, lol.

Your car is beautiful!

Thank you for your comment regarding my SLK - I quite like it's looks too. Pity it's a lowly 200 but plenty good enough for my needs.

Sound proofing mat is what audiophiles use to quieten down interior noise so their music sounds better. It's quite expensive unless you could scrounge a bit.

Another, cheaper, option would be to visit a breaker and buy an under hood liner from anything that uses a similar material to MB.

Welcome from the Sacramento Valley SLK Enthusiasts!

Roof rats can do major damage. Time to start a plan to remove all rat entry holes steel wool & get a couple of Rat zappers . Com. Maybe a few large rat traps baited with peanut butter & also a couple infrared sensors that send out a signal to deter them too!

First off the damage looks aesthetic and superficial, anyone that says you'd need to pull the engine to repair that is a thief, the damage would have zero effect on your battery or anything else, it would only be a problem because it isn't right and you know it's there (I understand). If it were me I would apply something like Great Stuff and smooth / form it with a putty knife then trim it after it expands (because it does), let it dry, shape it and brush it over with some flat black paint (all without removing the engine). for a cost of about $5 :nerd:

Great Stuff
Tack free in 6 minutes; Trims in 30 minutes
Foam elasticity allows for movement/shifting within a structure
Paintable, stainable and sandable
Cream colored foam
Cures rigid
All-direction dispensing
UL Classified
One 12 oz. can = up to 19 tubes of caulk

Patiently applied, trimmed and painted you could make it look like it never happened (all without pulling the engine). :|

I would also buy some mouse traps and a bait station to place in your storage area to prevent any further damage.

Good luck!
