Hi all!
New to Mercedes owner here! Picked up a 150K miles SLK 230 at a auction.
Dont know if I'm going to keep this SLK very long. Might just turn it and get a lower mile unit, but I love these little cars.
I am going to repair the huge list of fixes that probably drove the previous owner to dump it in a auction.
First on the list was find a repair/service manual. Scored a CD off EBay and waiting for its arrival.
Next was tires, Quick stop by Les Schwab handled that. Brakes are good.
New tires cured many imagined ills.
Now its time to chase the rest.
In no particular order;
High Beams dont work.
Might be bulbs, but both out at same time?

Huge rattle from trunk area. Might be lid stops are worn, misaligned, missing

Drivers window needs stop/alignment adjusted.
It travels too far up when closed and hits roof.

Get hands on OBD II and see why check engine is on and reset mileage on service mileage.

Repaint or polish engine cover plate. Factory grey paint is discolored and bubbled.

New front and back lid struts. Found all 3 new, on CList for $120 total.

Small plastic rattles in rear speakers and deck lid. Had Vette. Been here before...,lol

Replace broken fog light lense.

Remove aftermarket tint

If I keep this car I'll have a local custom seat maker redo and recover the seats. (unheated) Will go with gel inserts and better foam fitted to Me.
These seats are, uh....,firm.
Also will consider going through the engine/supercharger with engine builder friend.

Will do searches here and other sites on my little issues. Found some answers for other things I havent listed.
Mainly waiting on the CD to help decide to what extent I'll repair and if the cost of repairs are reasonable to compared to the value of the car. Versus selling it and getting a less seasoned one. Have a fair cushion to work (spend lol) with.
If the cost of my DIY repairs runs too high I'll go to one of the many low mile ones for sale.
If the cost is reasonable I'll keep it, drive it and then give it too my fiance and get a prime example for Me! :biglaugh:
Will update this thread when I get rolling. Right now I'm just waiting on manual, getting lid struts and getting all the lights to work.
Otherwise it runs great, tranny shifts differently compared to domestic cars and major components work fine. (Roof, brakes, suspension etc.)

Loved these cars since they came out. Hey, a hard top power convertible, Perfect for washington weather!!!

Thanks Sarge. Got the newbie post out of the way too.
And yes, after I get the manual I'll be doing searches. have done several so far to solve some problems. Links for dash lights for example.
Just thought I'd get a thread started for links and fixes I find in this journey of acquiring knowledge on Mercedes.
Might be helpful to the next newbie!!
Have worked on, modified many makes of cars and motorcycles. Just never a Benz before.
They have many unique features and designs. plus they dont readily lend themselves to DIYers like say a Chevrolet would. It shall be fun.
Nothing new to longtime MB owners, but a new adventure to this old Hot Rodder.

Busy day getting started on the "list"
Picked up the hood and trunk struts from a former 230 owner. He has a 320 now.
Nice 1/2 price, brand new!
A quick drop in at closet MB dealer netted a missing lug replacement and of course a MB hat!
Sunny day top down. Hey 60 degrees, sun in Feb. in Washington calls for something!
New polishing pads and compounds for the black paint from a automotive paint store.
Then a swing into the local foreign repair shop for a code reading.
Looks like I will be dealing with the infamous K40 fix. Thank you for the sticky and its links!!
Sounds like a long day in my shop coming soon!:tazz:
Going to finish my street bike servicing first and not waste these sunny days!!
:biglaugh:
The NW rain will be back soon enough and the projects will be welcome.

Welcome from another newbie to the MB world. Unfortunately I am much less experienced at auto repairs but I look forward to following your journey of discovery.

Very weak at the photo sharing on the web, but will give tasks that are not previously threaded a photo view too.
I upload my photos to photobucket.com (free); copy the IMG code of a particular picture and paste that code in the post.

Hope the above helps.

Update
Still have a few more days til manual arrivals from Canada.
So stopped by another dealership to get radio code.
Got it and a list of all factory service preformed plus the car needs the taillight recall done!
Very cool parts man. Enjoyed his company so much forgot to inquire about replacement mirrors.
Need to drivers side outer and rearview as the outer mirror had the water leak discoloring and the interior mirror is nonfuntional and loose.
Did get the list of options too.
Found out the car has autodim interior lights (does not work) and the vario roof.
So the fix it list is growing faster than its shrinking!
Also found the stereo is harman/kardon. No wonder it sounds so good at high dbl.

Buy a auto at a auction and somethings get stung with a POS.
At least its a cheap Mercedes POS:biglaugh:
Finishing my motorcycle project tonight, so the SLK will be torn into after that.
Photos to follow if practical.

Oh I see. Thought it was a optional key activated opening.
Just got back from picking up a clean drivers seat (mine was torn) drivers mirror and a couple of trim pieces. Dude has a wrecked 99 230 with many good parts, auto tranny, engine, roof mechanisms.Has sold off quite a bit.
If anyone has needs post up and I will call him.

Fixed the k40 module. Took the whole board to a small tv repair shop. Old boy who worked there filled Me in on how the boards are soldered and repaired 20+ solders on the board!!!
Replaced drivers seat with one out of a lower mile wreck. Much better. Have a heated seat if I decide to go to the trouble to wire it separate of MBs system.
Check engine light is off, YEA!!!! And now I know how this car is supposed to run. Pretty peppy little things! Runs so much smoother too. Makes the pulley mod a consideration.
Might do it so my Buick Regal isnt so much faster that it, LOL
Next, new shocks and tranny service.
The self dimming feature of dome light doesnt.
Horrid rattle from passenger side trunk.
Got a used mirror lens but broke it.
Placed it on the wiper arm to avoid scratching paint.
Jumped in car, turned on ignition to tilt mirror. Wipers on!! crash tinkle sigh......,

Did you figure out the high beams not working? Mine quit a week ago, wondering if it is fuse/circuit breaker, or bad bulb, or (hopefully not) the switch stalk itself.

Both bulbs were burnt. They each have their own fuses between the drivers door at end of dash. Hope thats your problem!
