Hello all, I've literally just signed up on here after having a bit of a read before buying my SLK350. It's a 2004 R171 with 66k on the clock in lovely condition.

Very pleased with it but am not too sure about the cold starting? It only just catches sometimes when stone cole, idles at around 500 rpm with the engine light on then comes up to normal and the light goes out a short while after.

Not too sure if I'm being a bit precious about it or if I should get it checked out?

Any help much appreciated, thanks!

You need to retrieve the codes at the least... Post back what you find. I have the same car with similar miles and have no cold start issues.

Thanks guys and cheers for all the info there.

I don't think it's the battery as should of had a full check before I bought it as it came from a main (Volvo) dealer locally.

I used to be a bike mechanic, but that was a long time ago and things were simpler. I was thinking maybe something to do with the auto-choke or similar? Someone also suggested the Crank Sensor but can't see how that'd affect it?

The guys at the garage are looking at it on the 9th Oct, if they can't diagnose it they'll send it to Mercedes and pick up the bill which seems fair and they're giving me a hire car.

Greetings from Tennessee !

As has been said, your starting issues are not normal. Find a dealer or a local independent shop that deals in M-B cars and they can pull the fault codes from the ECU. Those will point you in the right direction. There are several folks on here in the UK that have the Star Diagnostic System, like Seanhump, but I'm not sure how close they are to you.

Welcome to the Forum.

Hi and welcome ...

Get it checked out - it shouln't be sluggish to start - sign of a dying battery, and one thing these cars need is a GOOD battery.

Engine lights shouldn't come on at startup either, and a read of the codes should help to pinpoint the fault. The CPS (Crank Position Sensor) can cause CEL's (Check Engine Light) so it's worth getting that checked - it's fairly cheap to replace, but I'd guess you'd be having more issues if that was at fault.

Welcome to the forum! I think there could be a variety of issues there, but seems like your already headed in the right direction to get it figured out. Based off my time in Alaska with other cars, cold starting problems were more often than not the battery. I know I have had a rough idle due to vacuum leak, as well as broken intake manifold valve on the slk, which can also give the check engine light, but that should stay on if that is the problem. Is it automatic or manual transmission? Just asking because flywheel or starter could always be going bad, but that would be more of a problem with just getting it to turn over. Well whatever it is keep us posted. :)

Thanks for the warm welcome and the advice everyone! :)

Am hoping it's nothing too major as has only done it a few times and apart from that seems to run really well.

Shame it's not as hot here as some of the places you guys are from, nice to have a hard top convertible as opposed to my old rag top!

One other question, a friend of mine has a set of 19" AMG alloys, what's the general opinion on them...... good or too harsh a ride for the looks? Was also thinking about lowering it with just springs too?

Thanks again all, TGIF!!!! :)

Hey all, so I got a cheap code reader and it threw up a few things. A bluetooth one with the Torque app from the google play store. Not sure how reliable it is but it's in getting looked at now so fingers crossed!
