Hi Guys,
Just a quick question, Where is the best place uk to get a new spare key / new key for my slk?

I find them on ebay all the time. The cost of the key isn't that bad... it's going to the dealer to have it programmed that leaves a rash on the butt.($65 u.s., and NO, you can't find out how to do it yourself on the internet.. we've all tried)

If it's just a spare you need, don't bother with the box. Then the cut key isn't very expensive.

you just arent looking in the right place! theres a full writeup on how to swap the chip out of your old key to a new box the get the metal key cut. then you wont have to get it programmed.

So if I buy one of these fobs from eBay, who can cut the "key" part of the fob? Can they do that at Home Depot or do I need to go back to the dealer (which would seem to defeat the purpose).

I only have one key/fob right now so I'd need to get the key on the eBay fob (which I'm assuming is blank) cut.

Ordered a new "complete" key (with remote control) from MB last week, about $130. Parts guy said it would take 2-3 days & that there was no additional programming required by the dealership (though I guess I will need to sync the remote control function to the car myself). Out of town for a while so it should be waiting for me when I get back.

I seriously considered just getting another "master" key for $30, but figured it was worth it from a convinience factor to have two complete keys. Plus if i ever sell it I'm sure the buyer will appreciate having 2 complete keys.

I changed both my keys on my SLK. I bought two new key fobs of ebay at a really good price. I swapped out the electronics and blade from my old key and introduced it in the new key. Works like a charm, and there is no need to visit your local dealer shop to program the key (but remember to switch the immobilizer chip as well - located exactly where the red ir cap is).
