2007 SLK 280. Turn key nothing happens turn key again car starts. Sometimes need to turn key tree times to start. Today car stopped running while at idle and would not start for several minutes regardless of key turn ons.

Any experience with this problem and estimate of what it will cost to fix?

Thanks

Reuben

How old is battery? original?
have you had it tested?
Time for a new battery
the slk needs a great battery, not a good one.

btw, i moved your thread out of general discussion to here, r171 gen discussion

Battery could be original, But car turns over nicely when everything works. No indication of battery problem. Also why would it die when running which does involve the battery?
Thanks for your help.

Battery and alternator work together
to rule out bad alternator making battery dead, get battery really tested.
you could have one or more bad cells. so when you can start, it is using good cell(s)?
many threads on battery function/testing/chargers etc on our site.
dies when running means bad alternator.

I use ctek charger weekly on my car.

sticker on your battery should/might have date/year of battery manufacture.

Do you have a second key , does that do the same ?
I ha e second key no just before your post I thought I should try it. However Tom battery out and charging it so have not had chance to try. Also if it started it could be a one time start. Also note car died at idle after start. Could this still be a key problem?

crankshaft position sensor

I had the same symptoms couple of months ago.
changed the crankshaft position sensor around $60.00
do you have CEL on?
can you read codes?

Just something else to check.

also, just charging a 'bad' battery will not solve the issue
get the battery really tested first for cranking voltage, etc

Just wanted to see if problem went away with charge. After charge no problem for two days with multiple starts. Sounds like it's time for a new battery.

New battery did not solve problem. Sometimes (usually first try) turn key and nothing happens. Dash lights up but engine will not turn over. Usually next turn the engine starts right up. Put in new batteries in key to see if that makes a difference. Will keep you informed.

If you can start the car on a daily basis, the alternator and battery are fine.

You have a spark or fuel issue interrupting the running of the engine. In this regard, someone should compile a list of items to check.

Problem persists but still daily driver. No repeat of die at idle but requires multiple turn of key to turn over and start. New battery in car and keys. Any other experience with crankshaft sensor problem?

Sounds like it is time to get the car hooked up to the MB Star Diagnostic System and see what fault codes have been set. It will likely lead you to the problem area. All MB dealerships and better independent shops will have the diagnostic tool. Also, some of our members have them and may be able to help.

It took a few months to finally get a CEL to come on.
Had this "key" turning issue for months, works great for a month, then takes a few turns to start.
Changed out battery, good for awhile then back to couple of turns to start.
Car died in middle of street, waited 10-15 minutes, started again.
CEL finally came on one day and changed out Crank Shaft Position Sensor.
All is working perfect now. Been a few months.
I ordered another one just to have one on hand.
Something to try, my issue was hit and miss for months.
