I intended to wait until after my SLK purchase to introduce myself, but Jeff has encouraged me to post this thread now. This forum has been great teaching me about the SLK.

I am attracted to the 2011 SLK 350 in silver. My only previous experience with Mercedes was a 1977 6.9 which was extremely reliable for my few years of ownership. My relocation to Southern California has decreased my frequency of driving over 100 mph (where the 6.9 was at its best).

Major concerns about difficulty in my performing my own diagnostics and repairs, along with high cost of replacement parts has me considering a purchase of a 2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP in gray instead of the SLK. I like the safety features of the SLK, the 7 speed automatic with locking torque converter, the seats, and the retractable hardtop. The (front-mid engine) Solstice GXP is significantly cheaper, lighter, and includes limited slip differential. GM offered a tune not affecting original warranty, and now aftermarket offers similar tune: 280HP at the wheels and 340 ft-lbs of torque at the wheels.

Welcome from North Carolina! I wanted a"Sky Red Line" and put a deposit down to build a new one when they first hit the market. After being told it would me months before it would arrive, I decided the hardtop SLK was a better fit. Got a refund and purchased an '02 SLK230. Haven't regretted it since!

Not sure whether Your getting one of the last of the R171's or one of the first R172's...??

All I can say about the late R171's is they are generally very reliable (touch wood) and for the 6.5 years & 43,000 miles I've owned My 350, R171 It's not been to the dealer once for a repair.. (Except for it's annual Service)

As for the R172, I was speaking to a MB Technician last week and asked about whether the R172 was as reliable as the R171..??
He said the main things that He saw was the emission sensors on the R172/250d with no particular pattern to high or low mileage owners...
(Though to but fair, here in UK the they have sold ~14,500 250d's against ~724 R172/350's....)

I was referring to the last of the R171's. Haven't seen 2011 R172's listed for sale in the US, but I guess they are out there. I'm a sucker for the unique look of the R171.

As to reliability, I'm spoiled by my 2005 Toyota Tundra and 2012 Hyundai Genesis, both over 100,000 miles and nothing breaks and they run like new. 2019 Acura NSX Roadster interests me, but very very very likely out of my price range when (if?) it goes on sale.
