New member with 'after market stereo for 170' question

555 Views 13 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  DAVIETHESCAFF
Hello,
I recently purchased at 1999 slk230 (170) and would like to update the sound (communications?) system. I have looked over the Crutchfieled site and am interested in :smile:installing a single din with a mechanized 6 or 7" screen
that when open will cover some of the dash buttons.
Has anyone installed this type of stereo in a 170? and,
if yes, are you satisfied with it? In my mind , the screen
will make it easier for me to control the sound equipment and I may install a backup camera.
Thanks, stubone (Stu plays trombone)

Welcoming me from central Florida. We've got the stock radio in our R170's, so I can't help with your question. Good luck.

Hi stubone, a warm welcome from Southern Arizona. Good to have you on board. You have certainly come to the right place for knowledge. Enjoy the people, the forum, and top down cruisin'.
Hi Stu, and welcome from the UK Midlands! :)

I haven't done this in a R170, but I did it in a 2001 E-class a number of years ago. Pioneer unit with sat nav too... a great unit (although I can't remember the model number) and I found it a great way of getting a larger display screen from a single DIN mounting space.

Welcome from Atlanta.

The only thing I'll say is be careful increasing the weight. The factory unit is fairly light, and the central console (where the radio slots in) gets brittle over time... if yours is already broken/loose/rattling, adding more weight will only accelerate further damage. Maybe you could consider adding some bracing to support it.

My 98 had an aftermarket unit with a motorized screen installed by the PO. It weighed 2x the factory head unit. And the central console was in tatters.

Thank you. That is a very valuable addition to my info regarding installation. Would never have thought of it.
