Hello,

I am the owner of 1999 SLK 230 Compressor.
I live north of Antwerp ( Belgium) near the border with the Netherlands and earn my money as an
electrical&instrumentation engineer in the petrochemical industry
My hobby's are cars - and old cars:smile:
As many I have a roof problem: does't open and gives flashing control button but after driving about 10 minutes roof works without hesitation and keeps opening and closing all day long. The morning after roof won't open again-drive 10min.......
This is already going on like this for 3 years and it doesn't get better or worse.
I checked every wire and limit switch I could find any info about, but everything seems ok.
If somebody has any idea where to look next, I would be glad to hear about it.
The only thing I can think of is a malfunction in the ABS sensors/system so that te roof "thinks" the car is moving altough it's not.

2nd problem: radiator fan doesn't come in when needed, fan is ok and I want to check the electronic speed controller-dut I don't know where the control system gets its info ( ECU? tempswitch?tempsensor? ) maybe the answesr are already in the forum somewhere but I just can't find it.
By the way, it's the first time I ever posted on a forum and not really handy with computers.

Regards
Francois

Sounds like you are heading in the right direction with the roof.

Also, consider your battery.
The SLK needs a perfect battery.
Good, is not good enough.

Try to only use it with the engine running.
Is it any better?

Reason I suspect battery condition: It's working intermittently & looks to be when you start out.
The fact that it is ok after 10 mins driving & then ok all day long? Points to battery condition.

Couple of notes on the battery.
A brand new, fully charged battery can discharge after just 3 weeks standing.
An old battery can fully charge, but may not hold the charge for as long as a new battery.
The roof uses a lot of power.
We've just hit spring, using heaters, heated seats etc will have used power.

Good luck.

Hi Francois, and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us and posting an intro! :)

Some suggestions/links have been shared with you above - if they don't resolve your issues, perhaps create a new post for each issue in the SLK R170 General Discussion section, as not everyone that has the technical knowledge for these issues will always check the new member intro section.

Thank you

Battery condition SLK

Good luck.
Sounded like a good idea.
Charged the battery with an intelligent charger overnight, started the SLK and left it running on idle for a few min.
Checked battery voltage (14Vdc) and tried the roof...... no luck
Drove it around for 15 min stopped the engine and tried again: roof opened flawles and kept working all day.
It seems to me it has something to do with engine temp or temp under the hood(wich made me suspect moisture in some electronics unit) but I checked them all and they looked in perfect shape : no signs of moisture/damage and could't find any bad soldering.
The only thing I didn't mention is the ABS light somethimes lights up but go's away next time the car starts.

Abs light can stop the roof operating properly, it's the speed sensor which stops the roof working, I cleared my light and all is well with the roof. Get it scanned and find out what the issue is with the abs and change the appropriate part and you should be good to go.

It was worth a try.
Reason we tend to suggest this is it is free and does work for some.
Saves getting the wallet out for no good need.
Unfortunately, didn't fix for you, but it looks like Paul has identified your probable issue.
