As Jeff has kindly pointed out I was only 10 years out on the date of manufacturing of our SLK 230 R170 2001 (6 speed). We have had this car for nearly 3 years now, it has done 45k miles from new and although you might infer from my username (I have an E46 M3 2002 manual BMW) I have not owned a Merc before and I would say that it has lived up to all expectations. It is an individualistic sort of car, its handling is interesting, different from the M3, I love the roof which can't be slashed with a knife and I had it down two days ago when the temperature was only about 40 degrees Fahrenheit (but heater works very well).

I have during the last couple of years or so looked up many items on this forum, it has been a great help to me. Includes what to do when the battery has been flat for a while and nothing will work, including central locking etc, the dark science of on board diagnostic codes (fortunately ours has a standard OBDII socket behind the bonnet (hood) release). Recently put new pads on rear brakes - a really easy job on this car - even though I had to grind away some surface disk rust (living by the sea we get this problem as the rain is salty, often is it just one disk out of 4 that refuses to clean up via the usual route of going out and braking hard a few times from a decent speed) (Usually a rear brake as they have a pressure limiter unlike the front ones which take most of the braking). Had to have ABS rebuilt under warranty, no jack so I ordered a used but like new one on ebay and it came all the way from USA. Just did MOT yesterday, (our annual vehicle test in UK) with no issues, I bought the car for my partner and it suits her I think see pic - it is very enjoyable to drive along hilly country roads as it is very responsive, with the hood down it is the nearest I shall ever get I think to my childhood memories of being in the side car attached to Dad's old V-twin Harley Davidson...........which he sadly sold so that he could buy his first little house for his family.

Welcome from the Wirral.

Great intro.

There is clearly a relationship between bikers and SLKs.
Many bikers with an SLK in tow.

There's a handy R170 diy link in my signature below.

A warm welcome from Surrey. I often get lost in Surrey when driving Silkie and end up in West Sussex near the South Downs. Can't understand why???:laugh::laugh:

I even have SatNav active but can't quite hear the instructions..... >:D>:D
