Hi everyone, I've wanted an SLK for ages, the cars are becoming so scarce now. I think perhaps this is a lean time of year to find one. Just looked at a '98 230 an hour from me, ran well and low miles-56K but paint was going downhill and top inoperative. Bad corrosion on the magnesium valve cover. What's the deal with the front bumper crosspiece on the early cars? You know which piece I mean- below the grille there is a wide narrow opening between the running lights, and a horizontal strip mounted to vertical crossbars. Does this piece tend to fall off? I've seen two cars like that so far. What's up with that?

Hi and welcome form Lancashire

Yes the strip you mention is supposed to be prevented from dropping off by 2 plastic retaining tabs (for the want of a better word :frown:) they seem to get broken off when it is removed and not replaced, mine is the same.

The strip clips in place fairly securely, mine does not have the retainers and has not fell off (YET :| )

The strip below the number plate?
