Hi Jeff and members,
This is my introductory message, sorry to have taken so long to get that round tuit that we all know about, but at last it has arrived.
I live in Sunshine Coast, Queensland Australia and am 88 years of age, a retired electrical engineer of the old school who was taught in the late 1940s and early 1950s about thermionic valves and rivetted joints. (yes, true ...).
A son with surplus cash has just bought at auction a doosey of a little bright yellow SLK 230 1999 (model 170 I guess) and I've been recruited / conscripted into helping to get it up to scratch. I might be a bit grey on top but I'm still the pc guru of my family because of a long working life in that environment, as well as too many years in yacht electronics and manufacturing all sorts of things, most of which are now in land fill, and a lifetime interest in cars, most of which had clutches, carburettors and king pins ...
The car actually looks a million dollars worth, with about 156,000 km on the clock (say 100000 miles in the old world), perfect interior and boot, clean under-hood, threw no codes at all but needed a new battery, then started and ran like a new one. The main problem is that the folding roof does not fold ... he was told to just leave it where it is (i.e. up) and enjoy the Merc heritage.
First project is to discover why the alternator is not charging right. The new battery soon ran down and we took the alternator off, had it tested -- OK, 100%. Bought a new Transpo IB387 regulator just in case (waiting on delivery of that) but meanwhile we are looking for reasons why there is no or too little charge amps by reading through old posts here.
This is probably not the place to go into details so and I'll get around to that after a bit more self help. Thank goodness for such forums as this. I look forward to meeting you all a bit more in the future
