Hey guys

I hope i get some responses very quickly since I am going to look at the car tonight. I have never owned a MB, but I want a little sporty car to play around in. I have provided a link to the ad at the bottom of the page. I am pretty good with cars and have restored a 1972 Spitfire MKIV.

I have spoken to the owner and here is what she told me about the car.

Car runs good but has a lot of little cosmetic issues she listed them as paint on dash, ripped in drivers seat, stain on passenger seat, AC blows but not cold, heat works, Top works.

Told me the car she noticed some hydraulic fluid leaking out last time she showed the car. Also said she was having a coil replaced because it was slow accelerating and her mechanic said that was the issue. She got the coil replaced and said it was running great again.

She sounds like she is being hones with me, and I expect to fix a lot of little issues to make it dependable.

Car has 114,000 miles on it, and I am hoping I could spend about 1,500 and put about 30,000 more on it before I sale it. Also a dent in the trunk shich doesnt concern me because my brother owns a bod shop. Here is the link to the ad I will probably offer her $3,000 for the car. Advice is appreciated.

LInk to the ad

If you can get it at 3000 would be a great deal and plan on spending a few thousand on it for corrections and repairs. Just make sure the running gear is in good shape. I am talking from the raditor to the end of the tail pipe. The AC could cost to fix depaending on is it just a leak or some system failure.

The hydraulic fluid leak is most likely seals in pistons, the one in the front of the top is know to leak the age of this car. DIY is not that costly but dealer is out of this world cost. If it is this one it will mess up the headliner, You can recover DIY for less than 100 or but a new one around 250.

If you get it know you enjoy the car once you do what needs to be done. It appers the trunk dent does not effect the operation of the top is a very good thing. The dent repaired as away you go.

How has the car been maintained? Any records? You can find yourself in a very deep hole very quickly without someone who knows these cars giving it a once over for you. A $100 or so having a pre-purchase inspection can save you a lot of headaches and heartaches later.

If you do end up buying it, contact me to join our NC/SC SLK Group.

If others think processeng is right I would like to hear from you. However he just made a blanket statement and gave no explanations for his answer. Pretty much just wasted bandwidth.

I will take care of the expected maintennance, and address the neglected areas. I take exceptionally well care of my cars, and have had no trouble packing on more miles than other users.

This car is just anothe toy for me. With that being said I also don't wish to find myself in a money pitt.

I will discuss the maintennance records some more when I speak with the lady who owns tha car. I am hoping she has kept up with the recommended maintennance. We will see.

DO NOT BUY THAT CAR!
The trunk lid is an integral part of the roof opening & closing & with that crease in it you may need to buy a new/used part to replace it + fitting it so it lines up perfectly, disconnecting the hydraulics putting it back together $$$$.
1 hydraulic leak means all the hydraulic cylinders should be repaired/replaced a $$$ to repair, $$$$ to replace.
In addition if the car has not been regularly serviced there could be loads of problems to come.

Check out the roof, if it opens and closes correctly, no alignment issues. From what I heard, the roof can be costly to repair. There is a pick up list on a sticky somewhere on the forum, it wouldn't be a bad idea to go through that list either. Lastly, I am not sure what hydronic fluid she might be referring to, or where the leak is from. Could it be transmission fluid? $3,000 is a fantastic price for it if you can get it in proper working condition for a few hundred dollars.

Just bought our 1998 230K 2 months ago. We love it.

Yours appears to be a special (AMG?) model with the body color applied side skirts, wheels, etc.
Do have a prepurchase inspection by an SLK mechanic.
It will alert you to any expensive hidden issues and should, at least, give you a written negotiating tool that will allow you to lower the price well beyond the cost of the inspection.

Hi PROCESSENGR:
I am also an SVX World Net person.

More confused than ever after talking to the lady who owns the car. I still haven't been able to look at it because the mechanic didn't get it back before I had to go to church.

She said it sat all winter because they never drive it. She has two kids. Decided to sale it but it wouldn't crank. Took it to the mechanic and had a tune up plugs, wires, new gas and a few other odds and ends. The roof works fine with the dent, and she sent me a better pic and the dent doesn't look anywhere near as bad as the one in the ad. The interior looks typical judging from the pics. Paint peeled etc...

I am probably going to pass on it. I really don't like the idea of it sitting and not starting. If I get time I will go look at it, but I don't count on it.

Thanks for all the replies maybe one day I will be a real member of this forum.

I didnt mean to discourage you. But honestly, IMHO, any car 13 yrs old, with >100,000 miles, can easily exceed $1500 in repairs/maintenance within 30,000 mi/2 year period. The advertisement made no mention of service records.
As a "toy" car that you dont depend on, it may be fine.

Greeting to you too, fellow SVXer! The SLK we purchased is a lot like a SVX, in that it is a low cost of entry, with potential for lots of fun and potentially high costs. All 3 of our SVXs were purchased used, in excellent condition. All needed $3k invested within the 1st year to make them pleasurable to drive.
If only the SVX were a convertible! If only the SLK had an EG33 flat 6!

If been parked for several months the battery is dead, no problem, possible recharge it or replace it if it will not charge or hold a charge. If everythng else check out to your likeing than there is no reason not to buy.

Where in SC are you located, might have another member take a look at it with you and give you a heads up on some things.
