Hello All,

I found SLKWorld.com while searching online for a cure for a roof rattle while driving on uneven roads and only when the roof is closed. Seems to be a fairly common issue!

I'll be looking for advice on tyres when the current set of Continentals needs replacing. The winters are often cold and the rural lanes around here are untreated when icy.

Bought my car new in 2007 and am very pleased with the overall experience. Done about 34,000 miles so far.

Best wishes,
Jim

Hi Jim, and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us and posting an intro! :)

For trying to solve the roof rattle issue, check out the Gummi Pflege roof lube link below...

We have quite a few members in the UK that like to meet up from time to time. If you're interested in joining us sometime, just keep an eye on the UK Region section, as we post meeting plans there! :tu:

There's a summary post that I maintain for all UK meets here, and links to examples and pictures from this year's past meets are available here.

We also recently started plotting where our UK members are - check out the thread for that here: SLKWorld UK & Ireland Members and Meeting Points Map

Some great R171 info, including Owner’s/Maintenance/COMAND manuals, etc.:
Don’t forget to lube those seals:
Download your car’s brochure:
Mods you should think about doing to your SLK:
  • SmartTop: What is this SmartTOP all the members keep talking about?
  • Shorty antenna
  • LED license plate bulbs and parking lights
  • Chrome/stealth indicator bulbs (still flash orange, but removes the ‘fried egg’ look from your headlight housings)
  • OEM windscreen or Lighted/etched windscreen
Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
  • Post your VIN (or VIN of a car you're looking at) in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a free datacard (options on the car).
FREE!! How to get a free data card!
  • If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
  • If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.
  • Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If iPhone/iPad pics, you can only attach 1 pic per post this way as iOS names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
  • Want to 'like' or 'thank' someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any individual’s post that you like. This saves you having to comment.
  • New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link in the info bar towards the top of the screen is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.
  • Also vote or enter our Ride of the Month competition: ROTM Submissions & Voting - Mercedes Benz SLK Forum
  • Finally, the Picture of the Day section is guaranteed to have something to make you smile each weekday morning!
Thank you

Hi Jim,

Welcome from just up the road, Wirral.

As per post 3 for the roof.
Especially if the rattle is gone when you drive with the roof down.

Your local to me, so tyres wise I can tell you that I use Michelins without issue. Two rears for my 55 cost about £333 fitted (Tyres on the drive).

When you want answers it's best to post a question in the relevant section as not everyone reads introductions.
Search is very good on this site. Although you do get a lot of answers sometimes.

Try it for both the questions we have just answered and see for yourself.

If you don't already have SmartTop I recommend it.
Being able to put the roof up without stopping is brilliant.
As is opening the roof from a distance on a hot day.

Again, see post 3 for that.

A few of us are heading to Owestry on the 18th December to join the Midlands Breakfast Club.
The place is worth visiting anyway. Add in car clubs and it's win/win.

Many of us, including some first timers, are heading to Scotland in the spring:

Occasionally, I organise a Cheshire lunch.
Here's two from this year:

If you are up for a decent run out Sunday, we're having breakfast at Donington race circuit. 10am meet.
An ideal meet for first timers.

Hello Dave,

Thank you for your welcome and all the information you provided. I'm planning on spending more time driving and looking after my SLK now that I have the time. The last few years have pretty much seen her only coming out of the garage for MOTs and servicing.
