Hi all. I'm not an SLK owner but hoping to be one soon. For the last month or so I've decided to go back to driving a roadster. I've owned three Miatas in the past and though not a roadster, I owned an MK1 Toyota MR2. My search had me looking at MK3 MR2s, MK3 Miatas, Crossfires, Boxsters, Solstices, Saturn Skys, BMW Z4s, Audi TTs, and SLKs. For most of last month I was very focused on the Boxster. A Porsche has always been a dream car for me but after reading about IMS Bearing Shaft failures, leaking RMS and general maintenance worries, I decided to open back up the search. I test drove a 2008 SLK 350 and really loved it. I also test drove a Saturn Sky and immediately the Sky and its sister the Solstice were removed from my list. There are three 350s that I hope to look at on Friday. Two are 2005s and one is an '06. I couldn't quite get the '08 in the price where I would pull the trigger. It had the same mileage as the others I'm going to look at and the asking price was about $2K to $3K more than the others. Other than not having to worry about balance shaft issue, I couldn't really see the justification in the difference in price. I have to admit that the SLK wasn't really even on my radar when I began this search. It crept up there because over and over it best meets the criteria of what I am looking for in my next roadster. MBs have never really held the mystique for me but I find myself being more and more drawn to the SLKs. It's quickly become my top choice.

Welcome from Gloucester uk
An SLK wasn’t on my list when I started looking for a summer roadster but after driving a 350 I was hooked.
I liked it so much that I sold my Impreza WRX and used it as a daily driver.
It was then that I decided I wanted an SLK as my daily car for many years to come so went for my current 55
I think I can safely say that if you get a 350 you’ll be hooked for life

My search for a sports car/ roadster started with an old Fiat Spider as I had owned 2 in the past. Then started looking at Alfa Romeo spider, then Miata with hardtop. I figured I wanted something more updated, so I began searching for a BMW Z4. That led to the SLK 350. I was impressed by the appearance changes on the 2012+ years. Looking back, I feel the SLK 350 offers alot of value for the price. I will say I like my car much more than I expected.

Welcome from Kansas.

As a life-long daily roadster driver, the hard top sold me. The best of both worlds.

Summer or winter, I am always enjoying the speed, handling, and comfort of these cars. The 350 is a sweet handling machine.

So just to update the search. I was hoping to look at three yesterday. I wound up only seeing two. One was pretty much a dog at first sight. The interior looked like someone had trapped a goose inside for a couple of hours. Bald tires along with scrapes and dents let me know that the last owner treated didn’t really care for it. Engine wise it sounded good. I took my OBD II and it was showing no codes but when I see physical neglect, I’m going to make an assumption that regular maintenance wasn’t done.

The second wasn’t even on my radar. The other two I was going to look at didn’t respond. This one I saw on a lot as I was driving by. Beautiful light blue metallic. It was actually a 280 and not a 350. It was a beaut and only had 18k miles. The problem was the price. It was about a grand over my budget. Had it been within the budget, I would have pulled the trigger.

I have another thread where I posted that I finally found my SLK but I wanted to go ahead and post my VIN here for the data card. Also, I want to say thank you to everyone on the forum for the help and friendly advice. Hopefully I can pay it forward at some point in the future.

Hey @GenXer! Welcome to the club! This is a very nice group of people, much nicer than some of the other auto forums I participate in.

Well, I was going to try to pitch you on the virtues of an SLK230 (R170), but I guess it's too late, haha. But for the benefit of all, I will note this. I have a good friend with a '99 Mazda Miata. We've both driven each others' cars, and we both agree that mine is far superior, smoother, more powerful, more comfortable, and the convertible hard top is a must for city living. My friend lives in San Francisco, leaves absolutely nothing in his car ever, leaves the glove box open when parked, and prays daily that no one cuts through the top. Me? I don't leave anything in sight, but don't particularly worry about the car being broken into. And it's nice to have the hard top on the freeway -- much quieter.

Anyway, congrats on your purchase. I'll have to check out your other posts.

Cheers,

Thanks Kim. I had looked at some R170s and even Crossfires. I actually love the styling of the Crossfire. I never really worried about the top getting slashed on my Miatas because I did what your friend did - leave nothing in the car and leave it open. I really loved the feel of Miatas in the day. You feel very connected to the road, the downside is that when you get older, after a long drive you're going to need a session at a massage parlor to get the kinks out of your body. I toyed with the MK3 Miata but it's the one Miata exterior design that seems completely uninspired.
The 350 is a very different car for me and one I find myself mentally adjusting to. When the search was going nowhere, I found myself gravitating back to the MK3 MR2 Spyder. That is a traditional "me" car but I kept thinking, it's essentially a mid engine version of a MK2 Miata. I had to ask myself, 'did I want to keep buying the same cars over and over?' My criteria for my next car was something more civilized, more hp under the hood, and something that I wasn't going to have to spend a ton of money on with constant maintenance. As I kept searching, the SLK kept popping up. Initially I kept ignoring the SLKs because I'm just not a MB guy but I started to think 'why ignore a MB when it seems to be the only car that hits all the marks.' It's not that I didn't like MBs but they just never pulled me in the way other cars have. After that, the search was on. I get a little obsessive when researching cars. At times it borders on insanity but overall it's stopped me from making stupid impulsive mistakes.
