Hello everyone! My name is Jason. I am from Phoenix, Arizona. I am the proud owner of a 1977 450sl. Just got this car a few months ago, and just finding time to work on it now. I have several other projects, so progress will be slow. The car hasn't been driven since 2002, so I have my work cut out for me!
The good: body is almost perfect (Arizona car, so totally rust free) Car only has 83,000 miles. Has the hard top. Has the 4.5 V8. Came with all owners manuals and service books.

The bad: has dry-rotted tires. Fuel in tank is bad. Interior is in bad shape.(Except door paels. Those look like new) Windows will not go up. (I bought new switches, but that's not the problem.) Needs new steering wheel. Hood is bent/ buckled.
Going to try to get it running very soon.

I bought: New battery, oil, filter, air filter, fuel filter so far.
Few questions: how hard is it to drop the fuel tank? Think I'm going to get new wheels, ( The stock ones have curb rash. Thinking of going with 18" or 19")what's the maximum width front and rear? What offset? What lug pattern? Do any other Mercedes seats bolt right in?

I've always been a Chevy guy (I currently own two classic camaros, an El camino and a Chevy Crew cab dually) but I've always wanted a R107 Mercedes!
Thanks for reading!
Jason.

Hi Jason, and welcome from the UK Midlands! :)
from wet and windy Yorkshire

a wet and windy welcome. Another SL-head on the board, always good news..
Don't trash your old Mexican hat alloys, you'll easily be able to fund some replacements by selling them.
Just a personal thing, but I wouldn't want to put much over a 16" wheel on a 107. You could probably end up really ruining the ride. I'm on AMG Penta-like 15"s and they do the trick for me. Mind you, with the state of our roads, there is plenty of reason to keep a lot of rubber between road and wheel over here.

Try slithering down into the passenger footwell, hoiking off the fuse box cover, and seeing if any of the little so and so's have burned out. Take a picture with your phone or camera before pulling any out and replacing them. That in itself is a right royal PINTA of a job. Book the Chiropractor appointment now.>:D
