Here's why I joined. I've been driving higher performance cars my whole life, usually American muscle, plus the occasional Japanese turbo model. More often than not, I'd build my own. But, I'm 72 now and don't need the horsepower; I wanted a nice easy cruising roadster. I didn't want a Vette, too much "boy racer" for my taste. So, I bought a nice low mileage Lexus 430 SC. I liked the style and the retractable hardtop.

Big mistake! I've had it for a year now and I can not adjust to the lack of performance. I can't imagine how old you have to be before you find this acceptable, but I'll never get that old! I started looking for a replacement about 6 months ago and came across the SL55 AMG. My budget is around $30k, so I wasn't looking for a new one. But, there are quite a few low mileage 2004 - 2007 models to choose from. I got to drive several models and the performance is much more to my liking. But, I started to look more closely at maintenance costs and that's where the idea of buying one of these died.

First of all, they are damned heavy! If there's one thing I learned over the years, it's weight and performance don't mix. Yes, you can make a heavy vehicle go, but it's going to cost you. The potential maintenance costs of the intercooler system, ABC and all of the expensive goodies is just more of a risk than I could afford.

So, I started to look at the SLK55. I like what I see, so far. They only weight 3500lbs, they don't have a supercharger or intercooler, don't have ABC. I have not seen any mention of particular maintenance or reliability issues. So, I'll be hanging around, asking stupid questions and looking for an SLK55 that fits my budget. They are really rare around here, so it won't be easy.

Hi and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us! :)

I drove both the SL55 AMG and SLK55 AMG before buying my SLK55 almost 2 years ago... although it doesn't have the supercharger, the SLK55 feels much more nimble and fun to drive than the SL! Good luck with your search! :tu:

Some great R171 info, including Owner’s/Maintenance/COMAND manuals, etc.:

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
  • Post your VIN (or VIN of a car you're looking at) in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a free datacard (options on the car).
FREE!! How to get a free data card!
  • If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
  • If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.
  • Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If iPhone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as iPhone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
  • Want to 'like' or 'thank' someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any individual’s post that you like. This saves you having to comment.
  • New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link in the info bar towards the top of the screen is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.

Welcome, I went from a 2006 Dodge Charger R/T (340hp/390tq) to a Crossfire, then the 2005 SLK350. The 2005 350 has about 270hp, and is quicker than my Charger was, (about 1,000 lbs lighter) The 2009+ 350 is just over 300hp and should really feel quick. The V8 SLK55 must be a great car to drive. I didn't think they were 3,500 lbs, I thought about 3,300.
