Hey guys!

My name is Ger, from New York City and I'm so excited to be here and find this group.

It has been my dream to own an SLK since the first generation, R-170 came out , but my driving situation and needs in New York City made it so impractical, and I had to get a BMW M3 as I really needed the rear seats and more space. It's difficult in the winter in NY with the rear wheel M3, so I got a second car, a Civic, daily driver.

The Civic does the job, very low maintenance and practical, but a bi ton the boring side. Not that my driving situation had changed, I'm ready to get a second car, for weekend and occasional trips and finally my DREAM CAR, the SLK and the McLaren look alike, second gen R-171, is what I'd been drooling for now.

I'm in the market for a USED R-171 with a budget of around 21K, I'd been using Cars.com, Autotrader.com, and ebay.com and after about a month of research, I'm torn with the usual newer model high mileage vs. old model low mileage debate.

My choices are below and any info, link or direct advice will be highly appreciated:

2006 Mercedes SLK 350: 41K miles, $21K
2007 Mercedes SLK 350: 24K miles, $24K
2008 Mercedes SLK 280: 57K miles, $20K


The 2008 280 seems to have the best value except that it has the most miles but it is the newest model but the 2006 350 hits the sweet spot, with about 16K less mile:

The question I'm figuring out is if the 2 year (2006/2008) and 16K mile difference significant enough to settle for the 280?

Any other options or are they all the same in that respect? If they are, then I would go with the 07...considerably less mileage for only 3k more.

Thanks SimplySLK and Der. Yes, they're all the same, Manual, off lease and clean car fax, just need to get a PPI. The 2007 may be off the market , I'll find out this week, but if it's an option, I will definitely consider, hope to get more insight here. Would you guys rank the 2007 first, 2006 second and 2008 third bcause of mileage?

You're not settling for anything if you get the 280. It's a sweet engine, and can deliver 33mpg on the highway. It's well matched to the manual transmission, and a joy to drive. Mileage for any of these cars is trivial. Anything under 100k miles for a car with maintenance history is nothing to worry about, and above that figure there are a few more things that might need attention. But if attended to, there's no reason not to expect three hundred thousand mile or more out of these cars. They are Mercedes-Benzes: Engineered to a very high standard and built to be maintained over the long term. I bought mine at 89k last winter and it has 92k now. No issues at all that can't be attributed to normal wear & tear, and those easily resolved. I love these cars; my SLK is my fifth Mercedes-Benz. The old ad campaign said "Engineered like no other car in the world", and it's true.

Thanks Beekster! Your thoughts on the 280 are very helpful, and can't wait to get mine! The other debate I'm wrestling are the mileage and year model: 2006, 41K miles on the 350 vs. 2008 57K miles on the 280

Per Jeff's datacards, the SLK300 (280 is the same, designation only changed) has Airscarf, which is desired by many. My car doesn't have it, but with the climate control cranked up, a jacket, and a cap, I've been comfortable with the top down in ambient temperatures in the mid-forties Farenheit. It also has the base Audio20 and CD changer in the glovebox:td:. The Audio20 can't be made to run an iPod, so I pitched it and the CD changer in favor of an Alpine head unit (check out my profile page & garage pics for images). Ditching the CD changer give you a glove compartment again, otherwise it's full up with obsolescent stereo gear.

Really, the mileage should be the least of your concerns, Dream. Either is relatively low and these cars will last a very long time if cared for. The older 350 is in the range for the very rare balance-shaft issue, which is an expensive fix if it does go. The later car is probably beyond that.

If there's a clear maintenance history and a PPI checks out, either would be a great choice. The 350 will be fractionally faster, traffic permitting. On the track, it would have a bit of an advantage but not much, driver skill would really be the determining factor. The fuel economy of the smaller but higher-compression motor will be better, especially on cruise control on the highway.

It usually gives out well before that, though some have gone over 100k before failure. And it isn't sudden; as the sprocket wears the shaft timing goes out and the engine runs rough and throws up specific fault codes which are well documented and ought to show up on a VMI for any service complaints handled at an M-B main dealer. The '06 350 would have a statistically higher likelihood of being subject to this failure than the '08 300, though neither risk is especially high. The failure is due to improper quality control from a vendor (not heat treated correctly). Distribution was random among M272 engine variants used on all models of M-B cars during that time frame, not just the SLK.

I bought my car with 89k on it since it's mix of dealer and indy service records showed no signs of this failure and my research done here convinced me that: A) the odds of this problem cropping up were low, something like 2% of all engines built; and B) the problem usually manifested itself at significantly lower mileage and odds were that if it were to have occurred it would have done so already. A calculated risk, of course. But if I drive it five years and up to 120k miles and it happens then, I've done well on the enjoyment scale and can contemplate many more years of the same if I have the rebuild done. It won't be cheap, but I'll have a new engine good for half a million miles...if it ever occurs.
