I joined some time ago and thought I had fulfilled the introduction, but apparently it isn't there. So:

I turned 50 in 1998 and bought myself a present in the form of a brand new silver SLK230 from MB of San Francisco. That has been the singular time in my life that I have been in San Francisco. I lived and worked in Sacramento, CA at the time.

My baby has spent most of its time in my garage, as evidenced by the 28000 miles currently on the odometer.

This car has, I'm afraid, led to a bit of disappointment. First, I realized that in 1999, it wasn't safe to park a nice car in downtown Sacramento at work. I had my Acura CL keyed when it had 600 miles on it. So, my beautiful SLK stayed home most of the time. I retired in 2002 and expected to use it more, but the habit of leaving it in the garage "waiting for the right time" was already so ingrained, it was a habit hard to break. I considered selling it many, many times, but each time when I would research its value, I would think..."Hell no! I'm not selling my $48000 car for that!"

From my very first trip up the CA coast, the top has been unreliable. I was in Crescent City, CA and the top would not go up. I called MB for their road service and got the rude awakening that there was no MB help within several hundred miles. I think it was due to the trunk switch not seated properly, as when I fiddled with it, I got it back up. I should have learned from that lesson.

Over the years, I have used it only for special trips, like to Las Vegas with my sweetheart (wife). For probably 10 years now, the top has gone down ONLY when it feels like it. So I have not trusted it. A couple times, it has balked at going up...and really freaked me out...but mostly it just decides not to go down.

Living in Lake Havasu City, my nearest MB dealer was in Las Vegas. I took it to a dealer there (I think there are 2) and was lied to repeatedly about the pickup/service process, and then they made up a "leaky third member" at around 22,000 miles. Um, NO. There is no leak under the car in the garage. So, no trust in that dealer. I had a "MB trained" mechanic with a great reputation in Lake Havasu do the last service, and he checked the top and thought it was fine, but told me I needed to use it more.

I moved the car to Oregon where I plan to leave it over the winter. I posted my roof/headliner problem elsewhere, after which I was reminded to go do this introduction that I thought I had done previously.

So there you go. Not a happy owner, anticipating a small top repair at the local Salem, OR Dealer (I HAVE had good experience with them in the past) that may cost more than the car is even worth.
