So I noticed there were a few questions and concerns about replacing our somewhat aged and worn key fobs. Here is what I have found so far with a bit of researching.

To take apart your key fob:

Where to buy a key fob (warning, the OP has a NSFW avatar):

Remote Flip Key Shell For Benz ML320 C230 ML55 AMG (3BT+PAINC,2track) | eBay

MERCEDES KEYLESS ENTRY REMOTE FLIP KEY UNCUT 3 BUTTON REPLACEMENT SHELL CASE | eBay

For the links to the actual purchase, the first two do not have the little red window. The last link has the one with the red window, but it does not have the Mercedes star logo on the back (I called into the shop and asked personally).

However, I actually have a question for those of you who went ahead with the replacement: Is it absolutely necessary to have the little red window for the replacement to fully function?

This is the one that I purchased for my 2001 SLK 230. Works perfectly, and was simple to replace.

And, it does have the Mercedes Star on the back of it.
The little red lens is on it. It actually is in the area of the "chip" that you need to start the car. I forgot to put it in my replacement, the car turns over, but wouldn't start. Put the chip in, and walla, perfect.

Thanks for that link. I have one additional question though; is it absolutely necessary to have the IR window for the key to work? I would assume it's not required since the chip doesn't use IR signals (at least not in the other cars I've driven). I would actually prefer not to have that window because both of my originals have cracked windows. It would be nicer to have one less thing to break.
