:confused: Are those the light assemblies advertised on eBay? They surely look nice, and are a great replacement for the aged, yellow looking lens assemblies. Regardless they do look great. I checked and didn't see anything on this over at Benzworld.org.

They are available on ebay, in various configurations with and without HID kits. Just do a search for "SLK headlights."

Fit and finish is very good, but there are a few "gotchas" during install...especially the mis-wired relays that give low beams only (at least in my case). Lighting quality is probably not as good as the originals, but this car is a sunny-day driver for me, so looks are more important than illumination.

:D They really look nice. Also, a cost effective true Xenon upgrade for less than $500. I previously saw them on eBay. I emailed the seller. I asked about availability for R171 SLK. No response. They are available for other select makes, BMW, Audi, etc. Good job!

Man, I gotta get me some of these!!!!

I found them on Ebay for $275 + $50 s/h

Anyone find them cheaper anywhere else?

They DO look good, but I don't understand how the light quality wouldn't be better then OEM. Maybe I misunderstood...are these HID or non-HID? And if not, how much more for HID?

These are halogen headlights. Period. What they call "HID" is sticking an HID bulb --with ballast -- in this fixture. As such it's not engineered as an HID unit, it's merely a HID retrofit.

But still, with halogens they work well. I decided to use GE Nighthawk bulbs...bright bulbs without silly blue tint.

As it turns out, each headlight had one of the aiming mechanisms come loose, probably thanks to the gentle handling of our friends at UPS. It's now fixed.

I'll be doing some aiming tonight, and will follow up.

Bottom line, though, is that this upgrade is well worth the effort.

If possible/doable, I'd be interested in some nighttime shots. I guess it's too late for "before" and "after" images. Unless you want to disassemble...:D

I've already disassembled 3 times! :soap:

I just got in from a couple hours of alignment fiddling (yes, I'm picky). The pattern is very European, with a very sharp cutoff. I like it very much. Better than the scattered beam of the stock HID's. Highly recommended (IMHO).

Save the money and skip the aftermarket HID's. Get the halogen kit and a set of GE Nighthawk 9003 bulbs (available at Wal-Mart).

:biglaugh: I was just playing with you page. But...what are the chances you could snap some shots of the pattern?

:confused: I'm confused. You removed the HID lights and ballast and went with halogens? At least the light assemblies (lenses) look great in the daytime.

The HID's are blurry, as far as I'm concerned. The halogens on my wife's C320 are sharper than the stock SLK HID's.

Bottom line: A good, focused set of halogens is FAR superior to blurry HID's.

Actually, diffuse would be a better word.

As you may know, European headlights are designed with a shartp cutoff, focusing most of their lighting towards the ground and slightly higher to the right, allowing roadsigns to be illuminated. This puts most of the light power where it's really needed.

American headlight design, as mandated by DOT, calls for a more diffuse pattern so that overhead signage can be seen. Personally, I think the R170 HID headlights tend more towards this sort of pattern. But I prefer the European-style lamps, ever since I put a set of Bosch H4's in my Beetle in the late 70's.

Perhaps R171 HID lamps are less diffuse than the R170 units...

Ah, I get it. I always just look at "new posts". I didn't notice the R170 topics.

The R171 is like the European. Higher light pattern to the outside of the road. Sharp cut-off straight ahead.

Sorry for my confusion :)

I have fitted the HID's to my r170. They are generally great but in the wet, the water droplets on the headlamp cover scatter the light and seem to blind on-coming traffic. I now lower the beams in town. I notice that the newer MB's with factory fitted HID's have a self leveling device fitted and somehow do not have any problem with water droplets.

I got some of these after seeing yours. :tu: Did you figure out what the small black connector is used for. You can see it from the front of the lens down and to the side of the main H4(9003) bulb. I can see it in your picks but it doesn't look like you have anything in it.
