First off, hi guys and girls.

I've just picked up my first SLK last night, a 1997 SLK 200 R170. I'd been looking for different SLK's for a while. Originally was leaning towards a 230K which was a little younger.

Eventually, injuries sustained while riding my road/racing bicycle in France (had my bicycle slide out from under me, after which I slid about 8 meters on asphalt and some meters over rocks, MASSIVE road rash) had me fast-track my quest for a car as the injury has made sure I can't comfortably ride my motorcycle ('04 Hayabusa, delim/PCV). I found this particular one online, made a call and picked it up the same night.

My SLK 200 R170
is matte black (originally yellow), with black AMG rims and black interior. The matte black is definitely a hate-it-or-love-it color. I figured it's a convenience, since rust often takes the SLK's by storm at the wheelwells, which has been (at least partially) solved or at least delayed by some time.

There's a few things I'm going to be working on. The roof will not retract (flashing button) and the driver side power window will not go down. There's also a loud rattle when accelerating at low RPM, which I figure is either a stabiliser or maybe the parcel shelf, I'll figure that out later.

My history
I'm a self-taught "tinkerer". I've owned a '99 Cadillac Seville SLS on which I've done a complete engine rebuild (HELL, do not recommend that with the Northstar engine), owned a '94 Pontiac Firebird (my first car) with which I've tinkered more along the lines of replacing the radio, removing the catalytic converter etc. and alongside I've worked on my cousin's '92 Mazda Miata. I've owned a few other cars but no notable "tinkery/mechanic work" cars.

Plan of attack
- Driver side window not lowering
The passenger side works fine. When the window is up, and I hit the switch to raise the window, I hear a click from what I figure is the actuator. No such click from the driver side one. Conclusion: either the switch or the actuator has failed. I'll be testing this by switching out the switches for passenger side and driver side (if possible) to see what happens. I'm not expecting this to be the issue, but I like to be thorough.

- Roof not retracting
When I push down on the button, the pump starts going so I figure it's not a fuse/relay issue. When I pull the button, it flashes red. I've got the cover pulled out and I can hear the switch click when pressing it. I think the locking mechanism switch is also OK, because when I twist the rod, I can faintly hear a clicking sound which I think is the switch engaging, checking if the latch is latched. Lastly, I haven't checked the trunk closed switches on the rear wheelwells yet as I haven't gotten to taking out the entire lining from the boot. This will probably be a job I'll get to next weekend.

Now I'm not sure if the driver window not lowering might also cause the roof button to flash red. If so, I figure there's a good chance the actuator and/or motor have failed. However, the passenger side window also does not lower when pulling the roof button (my sense of logic tells me that it should, even if the driver side one doesn't), which leads me to believe the flashing button isn't due to the window issue but due to a switch either not engaging or failing.

I hope to know more during the course of the week. If I can't figure it out, I'll head to a dealer to have the Vario error checked so I (hopefully) will be a little less clueless :)

Thanks to all for the welcomes! :) Nice to see an engaged community.

A few things I forgot to post:

Firstly, the trunk lock cylinder will not take my keys to lock / unlock - the key will only go in partially after which I can't turn the key.. seems the cylinder has either failed or has been replaced at some point. The lock does engage and disengage using the central locking button in the dash.

Secondly, I think the electronics in my FOB have failed, since pressing the button yields no result whatsoever. I've replaced the batteries to no avail, and when checking the IR light with a webcam, no flashing light. I'm not sure if my webcam has an IR filter though, but I do know my phone has an IR filter so pointing it at that won't show the light anyway. Unfortunately, acquiring a replacement FOB from MB will take at least three months - the factory told the dealer to ask again in 3 months. At that point, it might still take longer... So no remote for me for the forseeable future :(

I'm also short a radio, which I hope to be installing later this week. I'm just not sure yet if I should get a DAB+ radio while I'm at it. I've opted not to go for a flip-screen since it will block dash controls and my self-diagnosed OCD will not like that :p

Progress!

My driver-side window is - sort of -working again: the motor was simply not plugged in. The reason for this, is the window not lowering and raising properly - it goes out of alignment, I figure maybe a new arm will be required to fix this. Anyway, I dropped the window all the way down, and pulled the roof button. Result: still flashing, so no joy on top-down driving yet. I've sent an e-mail to a local MB dealer asking if they could plug in and check the error for me. Fingers crossed.

Also installed the DAB+ radio today! Haven't gotten round to installing the DAB+ antenna yet, but this is already so much better than using my phone's speaker to listen to music! :D
Only two speakers are currently working - the main door ones. I've stil got to test which wires are the tweeters in the doors so I can hook those up to the correct wires. Unfortunately, nothing is ISO about the wires in the dash...

Planning to finish installing the radio in the weekend, so hooking up the DAB+ antenna and remaining speakers. Hopefully the MB dealer will be nice enough to help me out with the roof issue.

Hi, welcome from middle England. As has been said, that's a hell of an intro :)

Tip:
Make new threads with Matty's issues in R170 General Discussion and more of the guys will be along to answer them eventually, as intros do tend to get missed by many of the great and good on here >:D

Off the top of my head and speculating, the roof issue sounds like the switch in the boot/trunk isn't engaging when the roller blind thingy is pulled back. That's where I'd start anyway.

Have fun and enjoy.

Visited the MB dealer today - there's a 2 page list of saved errors, a few actual. The only actual error for the vario roof is the ABS sensor on the rear right wheel which is showing an "invalid value" (freely translated). Theres a bunch of other errors showing up as saved, not actual so I'm going with the ABS sensor as the culprit for now. Fingers crossed that it's just come loose and just pressing it into place will resolve the error.

The issue with my driver side window, is that the front piece drops down into the door while lowering it, which makes the window pivot around, pushing it out of alignment and out of the tracks. I'm hoping this is just a rivet come loose on the short piece of the actuator, if not I may have to get a new actuator from a local company which I know has recently taken an R170 apart and is selling off parts.

In Holland, it's currently not the best weather to be tinkering, but let's see how far I get this week :)
