Morning everyone, the cash has finally landed in the bank and it's time to go get the slk. Unfortunately After 2 months of reading the forum and trawling auto trader my head has gone up my backside with all the alternatives. Finally actually drove a 200 manual yesterday and was very impressed. A lovely 54 reg 350 has turned up on eBay with full service history 78 k miles but all the balance shaft horrors are concerning me. How often do they actually go wrong?

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from Valrico, Florida!

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.
Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If Iphone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as Iphone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any post you like. This saves you having to comment.
New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.
Post your vin in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a free datacard (options on your car). You must update your profile with vehicle info and your location and post an introduction first.

if it has that many miles, then you should be ok. Post the vin to get the datacard to see if the engine falls in the range of the issue. Also update your profile - put looking for vehicle and your location

MB doesn't publish the failure rate but it's pretty low. There is a simple visual check for this problem, have it inspected to remove all doubt.

Hi and welcome from the UK Midlands! :)

I can't help with advice on the potential balance shaft issues, but you've already been pointed in the right direction by others above... I know those that have the 350 always say how awesome it is!

Welcome to the forum. I had the same dilema, what to buy ? Eventually settled on a 320 with just over 80,000 miles on it , facelift model late 2000 with a MB service history to 78k then covered 4k in the last 4 years with 4 services at an independant. Had a few niggles to sort out which were no problem with the help of this forum.
But if it had been a total bag of crap it did not cost a fortune.

Regards Stuart.
