So I'm back active in another Mercedes Forum. I don't know what it is with these cars, but I just keep beating my head against a wall by continuing to buy them. And I somehow end up driving them home literally thousands of miles.

1st A white 73 SL that I bought (sight unseen) in southern Florida and drove (barely) home to Michigan. The engine ran fine, but the roof leaked like a sieve. Made it, but it wasn't any fun.

2nd An 86 black on black 190E 2.6 (sight again unseen) Houston, TX, in July. Made it as far as Dallas before the a) A/C failed and b) the blend air door got stuck in the defrost mode with full heat. Had to steal a bath towel from the Holliday Inn and stuff it between the windshield and the IP. Continued another 600 miles before the head gasket blew. Did the A/C and head gasket in my garage.

3rd was 2004 S500 that I actually bought near home and couldn't get the light bulb failure indicators to work correctly All in all not a bad MB by my record.

4th ...and by far the most expensive was a beautiful and blazing fast black on black 2007 E550 4matic with the "sport package". Unbelievable how fast it was. Also unbelievable how many electrical issues it had....electrical issues that leave you totally dead in any number of interesting situations. Like in the middle of an 8 way intersection...or making a left across two lanes of oncoming traffic. Or just under the canopy at the local Home Depot. After literally 15 trips to the local MB dealer and nearly $3k in expenses, the regional MB service diagnostic Dr got it to run long enough for me to sell it to a guy that shipped it to Qatar (can't imagine black on black in 120 degrees). And that was after MB replaced the ENTIRE fuel system due to a leaky fuel system recall. MB spent far more than they made on that car.

But here I am again, smitten by the sound of a rather inefficient German V8 (btw, we lived in Stuttgart for 6 years as an expat for DaimlerChrysler and then FCA) and wanting to feel the breeze from another roadster. So again totally sight unseen, I've purchased an 06 SLK55 in foggy San Francisco and plan to drive it nearly 3100 miles back to Michigan.

Which leaves me with a couple of questions please. This SLK is a one owner with barely over 30k miles. Before blasting off east, what would you all recommend I check, other than the obvious tires, brakes, oil, etc? I'm not new the buy an older MB and head in whatever direction is home, but any advise would be most welcome. Thank you in advance...and wish me luck!

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.
Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If Iphone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as Iphone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any post you like. This saves you having to comment.

So you are getting a 12 year car with 30k. That is like 2500 per year. Anything can happen as it has not been driven and many thing can be dry and stiff from such low use. Many time these low mile cars can have problems that high mile cars do not. I bought a low mile car one time and found after driving them as a very day car thing broke that normally do not break.

Welcome from the center of England.

Whereabouts in Michigan are you? I work for an American company headquartered in Ann Arbor and usually pop over a few times each year.

Picked it up

Picked up the car today, and it looks and runs as advertised. Still have nearly 2300 miles to go, but I love it. As my retired 747 captain father would say, "What a great piece of machinery!"
