Wifey wants, Wifey got a 2003 320. She found a silver, really clean snow bird, local car, everything checked out and we rode 75 miles to pick it up, and the deal was done. Averaged 85 home and she tried to pass me @ 110, but I couldn't let her pass the bike for long. Yep, she's happy.

Now I'm looking for the basic info and new leads for maintenance parts, etc. I've bought parts from Phil at mercedesshop on the other forum for past diesel MB's, so I'm not lost on the concept.

So... I'll look around and see what I can find, and if I don't, I'll ask. Just to save some time... What weight Mobil 1 do you use when temps don't go below 50, and are around 100 all summer,or is 10/50 Syntec a good alternative?

Welcome from Germany mndwgz! Phil's a good guy! I keep him on my short list for parts. He ships to APOs.

Oil grade...can't even remember it's been so long since I changed it. I get it confused off hand with the wife's Vue, run a different grade syn in hers. Oh, speaking of wives...a happy one makes a happy husband. But I'm sure you knew that.

Welcome to the forum. I have an '01 320. Mine hasn't needed much, so wait until you have a specific need, and we'll probably be able to scare up the right place to get a part. I've used Autopartspeople.com. I have my oil changed by a local MB specialist who I trust (not the dealer, a private concern), and I go by the car's automated schedule. I use synthetic, but to be honest I don't know if they use Mobil 1.

Gabus has the owner's manual in .pdf format and I bet he'll send it if you ask...

Just a little something unrelated: I don't understand why people make a big issue about whether or not a car was driven in the winter or not....in the winter there's less risk of the car being damaged from flying rocks, and the salt isn't really going to do much to the car as long as you wash it...cars aren't made like they were a while ago where things would start rusting easily. A car that's been driven in the snow is not in worse shape than one that hasn't as long as you are careful.

It's probably for a number of reasons, but mostly for the salt and corrosion issues you describe. You're right about modern cars being better than the old ones, but as you say "salt isn't really going to do much to the car as long as you wash it." Somebody has to wash it! That's why folks store machinery in the desert. Hot and dry aren't nearly as bad as salty and wet. For cars, that is...

Salt was one of the contributors to the demise of my 190D. I bought it with 200000 on it and retired it with a little over 600000. Years of 150 mile commutes every day with salt on the road for six months of the year... ate her up. Running it through the car wash every week was the norm, but it didn't help much and frozen wash water 2 minutes after I left and another 20 miles of salty road to get her home. Moved it down to FL and being a mile from the beach at the time just gave it more fuel to erode. The vacuum pump and exhaust were the last things to go, but I still have some great 17" Edge rims with new tires on them that will fit and match her 320 after I polish them up a bit.

I have to beg to defer slightly on this statement.

Yes, it's true rocks don't fly in the winter, but salt does when it's been or being freshly thrown. At least here in Germany it does. I just hate it! And nothing sucks more than having to pass a slow moving salt truck on the autobahn. I can never figure which is worse...driving past it quickly so as to get hit less (but harder) or driving past past it slower to get hit softer (but more)...Did I mention I hate salt trucks. :mad:

As for winter salt/grim build up...I'll have to take a picture one of these times before my car gets its weekly bath. Some might find it amazing how much builds up in a weeks worth of highway driving. EEEEEWWWWW!!!!
