Hi, I don't know if anybody might be able to help. Our R170 has started to occasionally make a loud "twanging" noise from the rear. This may happen if we go over a bump...though it does not happen all the time. It almost sounds like the noise a large spring would make. It seems to be from underneath, but could be from the boot. Any ideas please.

Not easy but get a look at the exhaust mounts underneath.
Handy if you have a friendly local garage for this one.

Remove the rear wheels and inspect the suspension behind them.

Your spring thinking is the more likely.

How is it handling?
If parked on level ground does it look balanced from say 20 yards away.

Almost forgot.

Push down on each rear corner with all your weight and release immediately.

Does it bounce straight back into place
Do nothing
Bounce like a rubber ball

I agree with Myk's comments above :tu:

... and I now realise why he's gaining on my post count so quickly... 3 separate posts for one update! ;)

Seriously, I'd be wary of a potential suspension issue... I've read before that sometimes a small piece of the spring at the very top can break off, which makes it very difficult to see that it's broken.

That was the problem that Daviethescaff had, if memory serves.

(the other way of catching up :tu: )

Oh, and if you're going to 'test' the suspension by pushing down on each corner, be very careful not to ding your wing while doing so! (thanks to Russ @55russamg for this shared 'learning'). ;)
