Yesterday I purchased a nice shiny silver 2002 SLK 230 Kompressor, with 42,000Kms.
I drove it home about 1000Kms and had a few little problems....first one was the transmission, when shifting after a rapid acceleration was finished the transmission appeared to go into the wrong gear, caused a "chirp" from the rear tyres ..then lost all drive.:surprise: this happened at least 3 times. After stopping the transmission was reset and was good again. Normal shifting seem to work OK ..kick down works ...as does the manual up/down manual shift.

Other issue is the engine light is now on....and I though I would have an easy time with this very low mileage car

Other than these small issues I really enjoyed the car.....

Regards
Kevin

Hi Kevin from another Brisbanite. You're in the right place to get advice with regards to those little problems you're having. I'm not that mechanically minded but there are plenty on the Forum who are who I am sure will be more than willing to give you some advice. You didn't say if you bought it from a dealer or a private sale, if you bought it from a dealer, I'd be heading straight back to them, if it was from a private seller, find out who the car was serviced through and have a chat to them. If you are looking for a good MB indy, get a few posts up and PM me and I can let you know one on the Northside that I use all of the time. Hope you find a remedy for your problems and you get to really enjoy the car.

Hi to all the group members,
I have spent a lot of time searching, but have not found a lot of info directly relating to my transmission problems. But it seems that the filter, oil level ckeck and 13 pin plug are the most common of the fixes. I will do all these very soon as well as the contact plate and the pressure relief valve spring.

Had a scan done at supercheap and the errors were
15 CAN signal from gearbox-supply voltage too low
C1010 battery voltage - too low
C2022 CAN message engine control unit - no communication
C1031 CAN message instrument cluster - No communication
C1200 Brake light switch - Faulty
C1140 stearing angle sensor - No initialization/defective
C1141 Pressure sensor 1/2 - incorrect / no signal
C1202 Release switch - incorrect / no signal
EGS ML (EGS 52) - 3
P2500 Transmission gear ratio - not plausable
P220A Transmission rpm sensor - comparison not OK
P2404 CAN signal brake light switch - not plausable

I still have a few other jobs including both the door mirrors and the instrument panel has been out and poorly reinstalled

Thanks Regards
KevinJ

Update on my 2002 SLK230

Hi All,
Update on my 2002 SLK230.
Transmission fixed.. Problem was the oil level in the transmission, Due to the low oil level the transmission did silly things. I purchased a dipstick and after a long drive I checked the oil...Couldn't find any on the dipstick so I thought it might not be going all the way down. So I tried a piece of 3.2MM stainless cable..it did show some oil on the bottom but was hard to read. Then measured the length of the stainless wire and put some tape on the dipstick, inserted till it was as far in as the ss wire and it showed very little oil. Two liters of MB trans fluid was needed to bring the level up to the 85 deg mark. Then of for a test drive.... WOW what a different car !!!! Shifts happened when they were supposed to no silly antics from the transmission at all. At the same time I deleted the error codes with the scan tool. Now more than a week later perfect operation and I just checked the car with the OBD scanner and there were no error codes ..Perfect. A transmission service with new filter, new oil, new 13 pin plug and sump gasket will be done in the next week or so.

Also today I picked up a set of AMG silver 17 inch wheels to replace the AMG 18s that were on the car when I purchased it. These are not exactly what was on the car originally, but the sizes and style does match the cars age well!!
Next on the agenda is to get some tyres for the new wheels, then a visit to the MB doctor for a general inspection and wheel alignment check.

Still a few small things to make right but it is real nice to just drive it now:grin::grin:
