:biglaugh: I suppose I should direct this question to Randy Cohen who is "The Ethicist" at "The New York Times Magazine" but since he ignored my question concerning the ethics of reaching to the back of the shelf to get a quart of milk with a more distant expiration date I am directing it to you.

Here it is. While taking photographs of these boats near the Bahia Mar Yacht Club in Florida I violated the law by parking illegally. Though I was not ticketed should I confess?

This is the local law on the point:

What are considered valid defenses and what are considered invalid defenses for a parking violation?

Valid defenses may include:

1.The offense was not committed
2. The vehicle was taken without my consent (stolen vehicle - submit theft and recovery reports)
3. I was not the owner of the vehicle or the person having the care, custody or control of the vehicle at the time of the offense. (A sworn affidavit is required giving the name, address and driver's license number of the other person so that they can be notified of their liability and can offer a rebuttal.)

These excuses are not considered a valid defense:

1. Lack of knowledge of parking laws and regulations
2. Disagreement with the laws and regulations
3. Other vehicles also parked improperly or unlawfully
4, Late to an appointment
5. Disagreement with or inability to pay the fine
6. Parked illegally for only a few minutes, or only briefly, etc.
7. Directed to park at the location by someone other than an enforcement officer

PS: Yes, I have a lot of free time on my hands when I am not in Bangkok.

When you enter an emporium, you can choose to buy what you want. If the vendor takes your money then no probs - I allways reach to the back of fresh provisions, to get the one that last's longest.

Yes, I think Randy would have said the same thing that you did about the milk and its shelf life. But, how about confessing to the crime of illegal parking?

If the Florida cop shop sees my photo can it cite me? I am so scared at this point.

There's nothing in the photo to ID your car. Moreover, it's a minor violation and not a crime.

if you want to get techincally i think you should define "Park" or "parking" which indicates your leaving the car, which you didn't.

could always say you thought something was up with your car.

Back of the shelf for the milk always and don't bother doing anything about the car its not like you are actually causing an obstruction there as you would be by lets say parking incorrectly at a hospital A&E and you where only there for a few min's to take the pics.

As easty says you did not leave the car so where you even technically parked and etyu has hit the nail on the head there with the ID is that your car? i don't see any license plate saying it is you where simply admiring it parked there weren't you.

And anyways its only a slap on the wrist anyways your not gonna bet banged up for it.

Its one of those things i am very careful where i park my car not to block people's drives or pavements and to look for vehicle accesses i hate it when people park and block stuff off for instance a car used to park at the house down the bottom of our lane and they would always just draw up behind the homeowners car 50% blocking our drive so if either of us needed to get out or say an ambulance needed to get in there would be no hope that pisses me off but on the main street in town the end row of spaces have shaped bays for bollards and are no parking but small cars can easy fit in without getting in the way i have no problem with that at all and i think this is the category you fall under.

Today I confessed. I am now doing 10 weeks of cummunity service: washing police cars and polishing "No Parking" signs....while wearing a "I am a parking violator" vest. After community service then it's 28 days of rehab for me.
